My uncle is giving me one in a couple of weeks. I don't have many details yet. I got a glimpse of it a couple of years ago, that was the only time I've seen it. All I know is it's a 2000 (not sure which engine), 115K miles, excellent condition, leather interior, all the bells and whistles (as he put it), just serviced, brakes are at about 40%, good tires, runs great and accelerates fast (according to him). I think it's black, but I'm not sure. I don't really know anything about the Monte Carlo (in fact, I've never owned a Chevy). Any problems they typically have that I should be aware of?

It's not a '77 with a lowered rear end and skinny tires.

If it has the 3800 series V6, check and see if the intake gaskets have been done. That engine is prone to those failing, and it lets coolant into the engine oil. They are a pain in the ass to replace.

Well its free so the price is about right. Maybe try to get him to toss in a full tank of fuel too.

Sorry you made the list: http://www.wheels.ca/top-ten/john-leblancs-top-10-ugliest-cars-of-the-past-25-years/

LOL I personally don't think they look that bad.
I believe they are a Lumina with different sheet metal.
I would take it in a "heartbeat".

Good Luck

Free car is well, free. Good luck with it.
You might check to see if there is a forum for them and check for known issues.

The sheet metal is about the same except they stretched the lumina to get back doors.
Eta: i take that back, the 99s were the same except stretched.

That's a good year and style for a Monte. Head gasket was always the worry on those when appraising them for tradein. Let the haters hate - I'd drive that today for a freeway beater.

The 3800 engine is the finest powerplant to ever come out of Detroit.

If he's saying its fast, it may be one of the supercharged models.  Don't recall if they offered the SC in the 2000.  I think that may have only been available in the SS models.

I like how he labels the Monte Carlo the poor man's Cadillac ElDorado. I was always under the impression that the Cadillac ElDorado was the poor man's Cadillac.

Honestly not a bad vehicle, my mom had one of the Supercharged SS models in like 99 or so. Free, hell yeah why not! Just do the bare minimum to keep it road worthy

I've always like the looks of them.  Basically a two-door version of the 2000-2005 Impala.  Unless it is the SS model it will have the 3.4L V6 engine.  SS had the 3800 V6, but the supercharger wasn't available until 2004.  I still see a few on the road around here.

Intake gaskets are a concern on those.  Not too hard to replace, just takes a while.

Rest of the car is uglier than a CA-compliant AR.

If it's an LS it'll have the 3.4 engine.
Not bad as long as the intake gaskets have been upgraded, which they probably have been.
Electric are horrendous though, BCM is always the culprit but not expensive to replace.

I'd drive it if it's in decent shape.

THIS is a Monte Carlo.....

So is this.......

The 96+ FWD "Monte" is a FWD W-body disposal car.

Now, OP, a used 2000 "Monte Carlo" is a front wheel drive money pit waiting to happen.  You have two options

1. take it and turn around and sell it for about $4500-6000 to a hood rat
2. drive it and put NO MONEY in it and when it dies or breaks to the tune of over $800 in repairs you junk it

Take money earned and then buy a REAL Monte.

Since it has leather interior i'd assume it has bucket seats/console shifter, which means it will have the 3.8L.  115K miles is nothing for that engine.  Replace the intake gaskets(along with the upper plenum), valve cover gaskets, and coolant elbows right away, if he hasn't already done that.  While you're at it do a coolant flush.  The oil pan gasket will also be leaking, change that when you get a chance.

There are a few other minor items to look for, post in the cars and bikes forum once you have the car and there will be plenty of help there to get any of the specific annoyances remedied.  Good luck!

No, it has the 3800 series II V6 and its a solid motor. You are thinking of either the 2.8 or the 3.1. I think standard MC had the 3.4 though.

Is it a SS? SS are cool, regular not so much.

Good commuter car or teenage first car. The 3.4 had intake gaskets that leaked coolant and the 3.8 had the egr running through the intake that would warp or melt the intake causing coolant the enter the engine. Both are relatively easy to replace.  I have seen those things run into the ground and keep on working. The only thing that would keep me away from them would be rust.

Nice comfy, economical ride. I have a 2004 Impala with 235k miles and it refuses to die. I've averaged about 5 cents per mile for maintenance and repairs, everything but gas.

If the LIM gaskets haven't failed yet they've probably been fixed, but if your coolant gets muddy have it looked at right away.

If it's got the premium audio with an amp in the trunk, changing speakers or head unit is kind of a pain, but it can be done.

Change the oil and transmission fluid on schedule and knock out any little problems before they become big problems and it'll get you where you need to go.
