Their new album Once More Around the Sun is available for a free preview listen on iTunes. You can hear the whole album.

It's pretty fucking awesome so far! Better than The Hunter.

Perhaps you should leave the thinking to those who are better equipped for the task.

Not in this case.
Seems like I'm not the only one that thinks that a rare siberian delicacy is more well-known than an oddly named band.

I thought you were talking about the member here and I thought "Yeah, he seems pretty cool. Why?". Oops!

Huh? Because he hasn't heard of your obscure band? Or because we never had threads about odd shit like thawed hairy elephants, huge masses of water underground, earth-like planets, and scientists experimenting with extinct microbes?

Don't start sounding all hipster on us.

lol, Mastodon isn't obscure.

Their last album hit #10 on the Billboard Top 200, they were in Monsters University, they get radio play nationwide (with their newer stuff).

You're probably just old.

That would be why I haven't heard them. I'm not a fan of Liquid Metal. I was a metal head in the 80s, but I am not a fan of that "speed/death/etc. metal. Just not my thing. That's what seems to be on every time I flip through Liquid Metal.

Thought at first (from the thread title) it was some kind of popularity contest for the member.
Other than that, I got nuttin.

So like Poison right?

Speed Metal IS the 80's.

There are a billion sub-genres of death metal.

Mastodon is neither. Thanks though OP, I didn't even know they had a new one coming out.

Saw them at the first Mayhem fest. Put on a pretty good show even if it was still in the 90's.

Do they do the high pitch voice in their real songs or is it all grunting?

This to the max. Leviathan and Blood Mountain are superb. Oblivion was boring and The Hunter were meh.

They don't much go for the harsher vocals anymore.

Take their newest album:

Love the lyrics on this one:
"I killed a man cuz he killed my goat
I put my hands around his throat
He tried to reason with the sky and the clouds
But it didn't matter, cuz they can't hear a sound"

Mastodon is a user name of a member here, and my first thought was "Why is the OP bagging on poor innocent Mastodon?"

The musicianship is excellent, and I think it's their best album so far.

I'll keep an eye on the song info.
Some of the music that GD has recommended has been surprisingly good.
