They're opening a new Galyans in the mall I work at, and I was thinking of applying for part time sales in the firearms section. Anyone have any feed back on this company?  Are the stores decent?  Well stocked, as far as you could tell?

I'd be working there more as a fun past-time since my regular job is pretty good, but I don't want to apply if the place doesn't have a pretty good reputation.

best store in the mall
I mean a decent gun selection in a mall, what more could you ask for, except maybe a porn store next door
plus they have cool non gun stuff, all kinds of sports and hunting and camping gear

they are based here in the midwest...GovtThug has it about right.  They have an okay selection but are 10-20% higher priced than my local gun shop (Albro's) and the service is miserable.  BTW, the guns are all PC (no black evil rifles).

Galyans does usually have higher prices than other places.  I have managed to get some good deals before.  I bought a used Glock 19 with night sights (that one of the employees had purchased) for $399.  It had barely been used.

Anyway, I would encourage you to go for it.  Stores like that need knowledgeable people in those positions and not the preppy snobs you so often run into.  It is too bad they don't carry AR-15's, but they do carry a decent selection of pistols.  (Beretta, Glock, Sig, HK, Kimber, etc.)

Meh. Galyan's. I asked the guy at the counter if I could order a DPMS. He got somewhat disgruntled and replied with an annoyed "NO". Anyhoo. Still searching for a good gunshop in colorado!!! (Bailey Guns looks the best)

I like my local one - only one in Texas.  Until a few months ago, I was buying Win Q3131A there for ***$145.50*** INCLUDING tax.  Bought about 15 cases for myself, family, and friends.  Price recently went up a bit - now it's a little over $163.00 - out the door.

A pistol display case full of Glocks, Sigs, HKs, Kimbers, ect.  And a big stack of free gun rags with a new Armalite tac rifle on the cover sitting prominently on the sales counter.

What more could you want from a "mall" establishment?

Wow... I sense a little bitterness.

I wouldn't be one of those snobby gunshop asses (unless the person I'm dealing with is a snobby gunshop ass) and would take care of the Vegas AR15 crowd. I still have some AR15.com stickers left from the BRC, I'm sure there'd be room on the gun cases for a few of those, huh?

i second the "need knowledgable people" suggestion.  have been to 3 different stores in the indy metro area.  the only store i've had a serious gripe with is the north side store.  the attitude displayed there is indicative of the general attitude of the people "up there":  snobby.  takes forever to get service.  and it's lousy to boot.

other two are oky-doky.  but it's always a pleasant surprise to find clerks that are not only helpful and friendly, but knowledgable as well.

if you have the time and the desire, it wouldn't be a bad thing.  heck, it could be your good deed for the decade.  [:D]

I'm pissed off again just thinking about it.

I know I posted it before, but I don't want to get into the whole story again.

The short version is, they refused to sell me a gun for one reason and one reason only - because I'm a soldier.

They acknowledged that they know what the law says, but their corporate policy wouldn't allow them to sell it to me.

Yeah, fuck those motherfuckers.

If they're the best store in your mall, you'd be better off if they tore the mall down and put up some low income housing, or a nuclear waste dump.

Galyans is GREAT as an overall outdoor sports store.

As far as firearms, well, tell me one major chain sporting goods store that has a better firearms selection???  Sure, no black rifles (except some Benelli semiautos and Ruger ranch rifles) but I don't expect that in a sports store nowadays.

The ones I've been to in KS and CO (finally getting one here in STL!) have had a very substantial rifle and shotgun display (over 100 longguns), and the best part is they stock a lot of handguns (not just .22s and wheel guns).  Again, tell me another chain sports store that will have as many as 10 each of HKs, Glocks, Sigs, Berettas, Kimbers, Walther's, S&Ws, etc. in stock at one time, and in a mall.

Yeah, you're better off buying guns at a true gun store, but occasionally you catch a good deal.  Ammo is priced fair, and sometimes they have great deals on .223.  Hell, I bought a USP40C there for $550 once, which was $100 less then any gun store in my area at the time...

Heh heh, I was just thinking.

Remember that old movie where the dead came to life, and the characters were barracaded in the mall?

Well, if I was facing a hoard of undead, while trapped in a mall, I'd hope there was a Galyans in there...[;)]

I like Galyans.  Here in Maryland their prices are better than most gun shops.  Pretty friendly people working the firearms counter too.  I have bought a lot of camping gear, boots, etc. there.  I would not mind working at a Galyans at all.  It is a much higher-class place than Bass Pro Shops.

Obviously your mileage may vary, because around here Galyan's undercuts many of the local dealers.  While they don't carry black rifles they usually have a good selection of black pistols at nice prices.

They have great prices on ammo including a discount if you buy more than 10 boxes at a time.  I've bought more Q3131A from them than from Ammoman, and that's saying something!

They have a good supply of camping gear, mountaineering supplies, weight lifting gear, etc.  They are what places like Sports Authority could be if they would ever get thier shit together.

I remember that thread, and I don't blame you for your opinion! At the store I go to, they'd have probably given you a discount for being a soldier.

The Galyans here in northeast Indianapolis is AWSOME.  It's got a climbing wall and supports about every sport there is.  Their fishing and hunting section is FIRST RATE.  The handgun section is fairly well-stocked with the major stuff (Glock, SIG, Beretta, some S&W, Kimber), but nothing really out there.  Most of the bolt actions are centered around hunting (nothing tactical, IIRC).  I get my Q3131A there (when they have it).

Earlier this year, some homeless derelict walked into the store, went into the gun department and asked to see a 20ga.  He then went around the corner, pulled a 20ga shell out of his pocket, and popped the top on his noggin.  They had to close down the store and clear out the mall because of that.

Around here, Galyan's prices are pretty comparable (and better in some cases) to the local gun shops.  Yes, there were no evil black rifles, but (unlike many other chain stores) they did have a large selection of compact and sub-compact pistols.

I also noticed several soccer-mom types looking at pistols for self-defense.  I love gun stores and welcome any that move into this area.  A gun store in the mall may be more accessible to newbies that are intimidated by a gun shop.  I figure that stores like this may get more people interested in shooting.

Galyan's?  We're finally getting one in Peoria!  I can't wait.  It is moving in right across from the Gander Mtn. though.  I wonder if both stores will survive.

If I was looking for hunting/paintball stuff, I'd go to Galyan's.  If I wanted someone to order an AR for me I'd go to a smaller joint.

By the way - I asked some guy behind the counter at the Keystone Galyans in Indy, if they ordered AR15s.  He said that they aren't allowed to transfer them, and it "kinda sucked".  I guess he was cool.  Until he tried to tell me that a Ruger Mini-14 was just as good.  He even had one he wanted to show me.  "No thanks", I said as I walked away.  I guess he wasn't that cool.

Take the job.  We need good people in places like that.

SJ,

Indy is my permanent duty station. I had my Military ID, out of state drivers license, PCS orders and my Indiana carry permit.

They stated they knew the law, but they wouldn't sell to soldiers who didn't have an Indiana drivers license.

I was told this by the firearms counter clerk, the firearms counter manager, and the store manager.

I don't like their anti-gun attitude here in Frisco, TX.  Galyan's has trigger locks on EVERY gun in the case and on the shelf (and they will not remove them).  They say it is a law(?) in Frisco because they are in a mall...BS...They fear that some guy will steal the guns and shoot everyone in the mall.  Well, what is to stop someone from bringing guns INTO the mall to shoot everyone?  Oh yeah, I forgot - there is a *sign* prohibiting guns in the mall....nevermind....

SJ, The reason they gave was "corporate policy".

I've had no problem with those exact same documents at Pop Guns, Albros, and Hoosier Gun Works.

I've been to several of the Galyan's stores and I think if you are good at selling you can make some nice coin.  The average person looking at firearms in Galyans is probably not as knowledgeable as those shopping in a specialty gun store.  They are probably more open-minded and more easily sold once you get inside their heads.

My advice is to take the job put more guns into the homes of the soccer moms and dads!

The one in Kansas is great.  Too bad I can't get pistols there(I'm in MO) b/c their prices were very good if I remember correctly.

That is the only place I buy Q3131A.  I just keep on filling out a "prefered customer card" under someone else's name in my family.  Then I get the $15 off coupon.  Q3131A was $2.99/box, it's now $3.29/box...a good price already. Buy ten or more boxes  and you get 10% off.

So 10% off plus a $15 coupon= great freakin deal.

I also got a 14 gun "Stack-On" gun safe for like $169 or so.  Again I used a coupon.  But the starting price itself was better than anywhere online.

Bottom line, I love Galyans.

HKocher, when is the one in St, Louis suppossed to open???

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I'm going to apply. I have to find out if they work on commission in that department, and if they don't I might try for a management position.  Depending on what they pay, I might take a harder look at them as a full time position.  Anyone know what kind of employee discount they give? That's all I'd be working for anyway, my paychecks would just go right back into the store.

Galyan's is good for stuff like:  Ammo, slings, etc.  They always have pretty good deals on Winchester 9MM, and other handgun cartridges (not as good as ammoman.com).  I have never purchased a firearm there.  I would consider buying a shotgun for pricing reasons, but that's about it.

They do here in Virginia.

Each time I buy some Q3131A, the sales guy puts his own little bar code sticky on one of the boxes so he gets his cut when I take it downstairs to pay for it.

Strangely, for a brief period about two years ago, they had a sign at the front door prohibiting loaded firearms!  Long since gone, though.
