Sometimes I look at my rifles ("freedom rifle" calibers: 5.56 and 7.62x39, "battle rifle" calibers of .308, .30-06, and I guess 7.62x54r) and my pistols (.40S&W and 9mm) and think, gee, instead of having to buy all these calibers, and have all these platforms, I could consolidate and just have ARs and Glock 9mm pistols.

Then I could sell my stash of 7.62x39 at the now inflated prices of $300/k

Of course, there's the "YOU NEVER SELL A GUN!" line, plus AKs are lots of fun to shoot.

So - has anyone actually followed through with the Great Platform and Caliber Consolidation?

I consolidated all my combat rifle or whatever ya call em calibers, sold off all the AKs and SKS'.  I also shoot mainly 9mms, but I still got a few oddball cals.

I have, I shoot:

5.56
7.62x51
.45acp
.22lr
12ga

I built my collection around these calibers and have added 7mm rem mag for dangerous game hunting, but I am satisfied with these. I have shot all military firearms (small arms) so the novelty has worn off with them and I think it's best to stick to the core I have.

What's the opposite of consolidation?  Because that's what I keep doing.
Link Posted: 4/29/2009 8:21:05 PM EDT
well, I sold my AK and 7000 rounds of x39 and 40 mags

and some odd revolvers and some stuff.

but my go to's are AR's and G19's. and all my efforts go to supporting those.

the SKS and M39's aren't worth enough to sell, so they just sit.

so to answer your question.........sort of.

ARs and Glocks here. I do have one 6.8mm upper, one .40 cal Glock and the rest are 5.56 and 9X19.

Further down the line when I branch out again it'll be a couple 1911s in .45 and an AK in 7.62, all built how I want them.

I had this conversation with the wife, and came to the conclusion that I could sell half my firearms and not be able to afford to consolidate calibers based on the profits.

The 8mm and 7.62x54 could go, the AK's are rather pointless w/o ammo (the only profit generator), and I work on US Army weapons for a living and should really concentrate on what I have tools for and knowledge to fix.

Then the "never sell a gun" thing pops up, and without selling the AK's, there's really no point in selling anything I own.

Me...

for the most part I own 9mm Glocks, Ar-15s and 12 gauges.

Few different ones here and there but overall that's it.
Link Posted: 4/29/2009 8:34:36 PM EDT
Not really. I like variety.
Link Posted: 4/29/2009 8:35:05 PM EDT
Makes me cry too sometimes. Most of my friends shoot the same guns, so we now reload for all se shoot. This saves quite a bit on ammo too.

Yeah, I can consolidate ok.

I went from:

3 AR's (absolutely every toy you can imagine for them, too.  ACOG's, lasers, surefires, etc.)

SVD (a real one!)

Arsenal AK

Romak

Remington 700P with Mark 4 scope

Two pricey Mossbergs

Glock 26, 34

GSG-5 and PK (pistol and carbine both)

Tanfoglio Match .45

Mosin-Nagant 91/30

God...I don't even remember the others.

anyway, I went TO!:

SA Loaded 1911

Mosin-Nagant 91/30 (nice hexagonal 1935 receiver...all mint with all the goodies.  shoots like a dream)

AND THAT'S IT!

So I went from:

5.56

7.62 Nato

7.62x39

7.62x54R

9mm

.45 ACP

.22LR

12 gauge

TO:

.45

7.62x54R

Yeah...I consolidated a bit.

I narrowed it down to 6.8 SPC and .45 ACP.

I did keep one 5.56 upper and some mags just in case.

I keep saying that I am going to do that but I never do.  I sold off .45 a while ago to consolidate hand gun calibers, but I recently bought another .45 so back to square one.

No.  I keep adding calibers.

Currently I have:

.380 (two handguns)
9mm (one handgun)
.38 Special (one handgun)
.22 wmr (one rifle)
and recently added 20 gauge (one shotgun)

Though, I have given serious thought to selling the 9mm and moving to .40 S&W and keeping my handguns in .40 S&W and .380 for the most part.

I'm going to really try and keep it with these four, but I really want an Arisaka...

I have a variety of different calibers and guns....however I focus mostly around

22LR
223.
7.62X39
30-06
9mm
45

I've also got

8X56R
7.62X54R
303 Brit
308
12GA
Link Posted: 4/29/2009 9:07:08 PM EDT
I have

.22
10mm
5.56

what else do i need?
Link Posted: 4/29/2009 9:08:31 PM EDT
Did exactly that 2 years ago....before the election...and right after I started my consolidated-caliber-ammo-stash- project in earnest.  I sold and / or traded the following:

.270 Win. Remington Mountain rifle
Remington Sendero 7mm mag
Beretta Silver Pigeon shotgun
SKS and Bulgarian AK
Marlin .22 magnum rifle
Marlin .45-70 guide gun

and I got

NVD's
suppressors
SBR's in 5.56 AND 6.8

Ammo for 5.56, 6.8 SPC, .308,  .40 S & W, and 22 LR before prices went to the fucking stratosphere.
Link Posted: 4/29/2009 9:11:38 PM EDT
To be practical I would standardize on 9mm, .22LR, 5.56 and .308. Not much you can't do with those 4 calibers.

Firearms could be:

AR15, 5.56mm (Also a .22LR conversion kit for cheap plinking/training)
10/22, .22LR
Glock 19, 9mm
Some sort of fancy boltgun in .308, most likely based on a Remington 700.

That about covers all the bases, although adding a subcompact 9mm (Glock 26, SIG P239, etc.) and maybe a semi-auto .308 like an AR10 or derivative might make sense.

I'm really not all that concerned with consolidating. I enjoy shooting various firearms and couldn't stand only having one platform for rifle, one for pistol, and one for shotgun. I doubt I'll add anything else caliber wise, but there really isn't anything else I want either.

Not really. I actively (compulsively) hoard all of these calibers.

Link Posted: 4/29/2009 9:16:00 PM EDT
I didnt just consolidate caliber, I consolidated mags.

Link Posted: 4/29/2009 9:16:54 PM EDT
Yup.  It was a sad day when I sold my Glock 23 (.40), Winchester (.30-.30) and my .410.

I'm fairly young, so don't yell at me for not stocking up when ".223 was $0.10 a box!!"

Rifles:
.223/5.56
.308
.30-06
Pistols:
.45
9mm Luger
Rifles and Pistols:
.22lr
Shotgun:
12 gauge
Link Posted: 4/29/2009 9:19:31 PM EDT
I'm trying to stick to .223 and .308 and 9mm and .45 in the bulk of my collection.

If I can get cheap guns or ammo, I'm not against buying them, just probably not going to stock ammo for other calibers. Mosins for example, I've got multiple rifles and lots of ammo for because they're cheap.
Link Posted: 4/29/2009 9:21:41 PM EDT
I have a SAM7 and about 5000 rounds of 7.62.  I know that I could sell it for a pile and help my consolidation, but I keep not doing it.  Would be nice to spend that on other toys thought.

I did this a few years ago - makes things simpler for me.  I got rid of .380, .40, .44, 7.62x39, 5.45mm, 7.62x51 (military surplus only) and sold off 3 redundant ARs and an AR10.

I'm now in the process of consolidating ammo, and sticking to a more limited number of brands / types, so I'm selling off tons of 9mm, .22, 45acp, .308 and 5.56mm.

I'm certain the simplification will make my life easier down the road, but I'm a pack rat by nature, so I have to do an inventory and cull every once in a while to get rid of stuff I really shouldn't have purchased in the first place.

Started doing it several years ago: 12 guage, .308, .45ACP, .22LR. Might still pick up a 7.62x39 again for a truck gun.

What kind of handgun would that be recently?

WTF, you actually shoot 8x56? Ammo for the damn things might as well be non existent.
