Not enough 'splosions and speshul affex?

Considering it was the work of a first time writer/director on a shoe string budget, I think it is pretty amazing. The dialogue is what is so incredible about Reservoir Dogs. The way he captured the realism of a bunch of low life's talking about pop songs and strippers and tipping is extremely well crafted. Most screenwriters can't pen dialogue that good on their 30th script.

Reservoir Dogs opened up a whole new world of gritty, realistic crime films and has influneced countless other movies, TV shows, music videos, and even commercials.

That, and the hype came well after the movie was released. (Think opposite of Blair Witch).  And because it was outstanding.

That is the one and only example I have seen of (bear with me on naming it) "violence pornography." It is porn in just about every way, from the fact that the participants are focused on and wallowing in the act in ways people never do/would in real life to the off-the-wall background music.

Obviously, if you look at the definition and etymology of "pornography," that scene isn't porn. However IMO it is indistinguishable from porn except that the subject is violence and/or torture rather than sex. I think part of the reason it's disturbing is that you are bombarded with all these nonverbal cues that say "pornpornpornpornporntittiestittiescootercominupinaminutecootercootercooterpornpornpornpornporn," and what you're getting is a guy being doused in gasoline and having his ear sliced off. The unease is your mind trying to sort out the inconsistencies.

Quentin Tarrantino is perhaps the only millionaire who is also a pathetic wannabe. He seems to be stuck with a self-identification as "9th Grade Nerd," and (when I see him on talk shows) to get tied into a loop imitating the last "regular man" he saw.

"<snort> henhhenhhenh! Yeaaaah. So I just bitch-slapped the moefoe. henhhenhhenh.<snortsnort>"

I don't think they bitch-slapped each other where he grew up, and I seriously doubt he's bitch-slapped (whatever he thinks it means) anybody, ever. (Not that hitting people is cool; it's just that he seems to think it is.)

Anyhow, nerd though Tarrantino is, RD is a very good movie.

"Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right..." I just watched that movie Thursday night. The best part is when Mr. Blonde is getting ready to light the cop on fire, and Mr. Orange empties his mag into his chest, knocking him back about 30 feet. It's a close call between that and the scene at the beginning when Mr. Pink is talking about how he refuses to tip waitresses, and he plays "the world's smallest violin".

Edit to add: Another example of how the only way Quentin can get in a movie, it to direct it himself! He can't act worth a shit.

This is pretty close to why I thought it sucked and all the thug worshipping lowlifes across the US think it's such a great movie.
For the same reason ogrish is such a popular site, 'backyard wrestling' tapes/vidoes sell and 'jackass' spawned all kinds of imitations, simply the violence porn that the kiddies need these days.

Ridiculously over the top with thrown in "shock-value" for the no other purpose than self-consciously trying to shock you with how over-the-top it is. whatever.

I saw it about a year after it came out after hearing everyone talk about how great it was so when I finally saw it the only thing I could think of was "..that was it?".

Yeah, that one scene was pretty messed up. I honestly believe there are people here that hate "JBT's" so much that they probably get off on that scene. Sorta along the same line of thinking of someone else here, it is probably like porn to some of these people. I HOPE I am wrong on that.

I was hoping that Tarantino was using our emotions to show how bad of a bad guy whats-his-name was, but then I saw some of the extras on the DVD. One of them shows some action figures they made for the movie (for amusement), and one of the figures was a cop tied to a chair with a removable ear. He was laughing a lot like the idea the said torture was something he found enjoyable. From what I've heard from others, Tarantino is suposedly a pretty distrubed, sick kind of guy.

And YES, ever since I saw that movie, I can NEVER hear "stuck in the middle" without thinking of the scene in question.

But yes, overall it was a fairly good movie. Not great, a bit over-hyped, but not bad.

Hated all of those.

STILL thought RD was a waste of time.

I REALLY couldn't get into it. There wasn't a single character that I liked enough to give a shit if they lived or died. Not one.

I love that song, everytime I hear that song I smile and think of that scene.

At my work we have some background music playing, and that song comes on semi-regularly.

Yesterday night I was closing and that song played, I looked a co-worker and asked them if they have ever seen Resevoir Dogs, they said no, so I told them to go watch it because they would never hear that song in the same way again.

I'm not sure if this makes it better or worse for you, but IMDB.com (  us.imdb.com/title/tt0105236/trivia ) has this to say about Mr. Pink's status at the end of the flick.

"SPOILER: According to Tarantino, Mr. Pink does in fact survive. You can verify this by increasing the volume of the background sounds: When Mr. Pink runs out of the building with the diamonds, police officers can be heard shouting at him to put his hands on the ground. Gunshots can be heard, then Mr. Pink shouts that he has been shot. You can then hear the officers talking to each other as Pink is arrested."

Apparently Michael Madsen was a little disturbed by the whole thing, as well...

From IMDB

"When the cop pleads for his life during the torture scene, he says that he has a child at home. This line was improvised by Kirk Baltz, and when he first said it, Michael Madsen (himself a new father at the time) was so disturbed by the idea of leaving a child fatherless that he couldn't finish the scene."
