I've never tried MagicJack myself, but I've been using VOIP for years.  It uses the same technology as Magicjack.
It's not to  the point where it's not 100% reliable as your old analog home phone line, but I deal with minor interruptions for $16 bucks a month.  Yes that's $16 a month included all taxes and fees for unlimited local and long distance.

It's just VOIP.

I think Linux has some VOIP applications that are free from subscription.

Looks interesting and it's only a ONE time fee that will work forever or at least a very long time?

I have a magic jack.
It works as advertised.

I showed it to a friend who was going to Afghanistan for a year with the USDA
He bought one and is using it over there to talk to his wife here in the US
He called me on it and it worked great.
