So I went to the range not too long ago. I brought both my Colt 6920 and my custom flint longrifle. When I unloaded on the bench the ENTIRE range stopped shooting and everyone looked at me like I was from another planet before shaking their heads and continuing with their business. Am I a fluke of nature or does anyone else like some variety in their shooting?

If I ever get my flint kit put together, I'll be doing the same thing. Shot percussion a lot when I was a teenager, but now I realize the error of my ways and prefer flintlocks.

Bushmaster AR, Variety of centerfires, Flintlock and now Inline.
Extends the hunting season here in PA. Variety is the 'Spice Of Life' Let them LOOK, They will never know the enjoyment. |
I shoot a .58 1861 Springfield. There's nothing better than a cloud of black powder smoke.
I'll probably get one when I get my rebates and my tax refund in...

The only time I shoot a muzzle loader is the 2nd week in November and the last 3 weeks of December for deer hunting. I get no joy in shooting it.
I have a Hawkins Percussion Rifle that is a lot of fun to shoot.
I've got to get me a kit for next winters project.
But I've been saying that for years. |
Another flintlock shooter here. I've been to classes to learn how to build my own too. If you want to read about blackpowder sharpshooters, cut & paste this: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=36853

I shoot a Bushmaster and a TC encore 209x50, I also have a Knight Revolution and a .44 black powder revolver. I would like to try a flintlock.
Funny you mention that, after 20+ years in CA, all I can say is God Bless Texas! |
I do. I have 2 customs, I shoot one of those. I also shoot a TC patriot. I made a cannon once that was technically a muzzle loader too
Thanks for reminding me Selvatico,
I've had my muzzleloader loaded since the muzzleloader deer season last month. didn't get a shot at a deer. I think I'll go outside right now and see if it will fire. It's 9:00pm here in Mn, I'll see if the wife wakes up from the shot or lack there of. I'll report back in a few min. GM |
Yeah but if you shoot it you will have to clean it, I say wait till next year I have a percussion cap that I use when I want to be legal the week it is required during deer season. I can say I own a .50 cal though |

Well, I went out on the front porch and threw a cap on the nipple,
and she fired right off. Not bad for sitting for a month with powder and ball through different temps and humidity. The wife slept right through it. GM |
I have over 12 black rifles & I enjoy each of them But I also enjoy getting back to the old ways with my Thompson Center Rennagade
Funny you should mention that LANCEMAN, That is just what I was thinking when I fired it. Now I have to get to work with the hot water and the "barrel butter" GM |

There you go...solid proof of muzzleloader reliability. Better than an AK, even those rusty, buried ones that still shoot with 1/2 the receiver and action melted away !! |
Well, you have not lived until you have shot a good flintlock... Flintlocks are the shit... Powder going off in the pan in front of your face, and satisfying cloud of smoke is what it is all about... If you have a good lock, you can even fire the gun upside down...try it sometime with a blank charge... I have a custom flint rifle, and so called evil assault rifles. I find shooting both types very relaxing... I enjoy anything that goes bang |

Blackpowder will NOT break down. It's lifespan is indefinate. If black powder gets wet, dry it out and it will work just fine. |

Blackpowder will NOT break down. It's lifespan is indefinate. If black powder gets wet, dry it out and it will work just fine. NOT TRUE! I learned that one from experience. Where do you think that old saying "Keep yer powder dry" came from? But, properly stored Black Powder WILL last forever. Black powder is a moisture magnet, and once it gets wet it's all over. Sure, you may get a fizzle if you dry it out really good, but it's burning potential is ruined. |
Yeah i have a TC .54 Hawken and a TC Omega .50 in addition to all the black rifles ,tactical shotguns and handguns
AS my Colt M16A1 is a Gen-u-wine Assault Rifle I'll say I do half of what you asked.
Built a Hawken two winters ago.
I highly recomend it, it has been the most satisfying gun project to date! |
I have a 30 round mag that has had 30 rounds loaded in it for the last year.
Should I go out on the porch and see if the AR performs as well as the muzzleloader? The wife may wake up for this one On second thought, you guys will egg me on just to get me in trouble GM |
I have a Thompson Center Renegade Lower with a Green Mountain .58 cal. 32" 1 in 70" Twist Upper.
I am in PA for a few weeks, I shot my AR and AK this morning and took the flintlock out this afternoon to hunt for deer. Didn't get a shot though.
Come on, do it! you don't want to wear out your mag spring do you? Don't forget to be at least a mile and 1/2 from any occupied buildings, though and remember to check all your local ordinances. I wouldn't want to advocate any illegal activity on the forums. And that way you won't wake up your wife. That would be a lot worse than a night in jail. |
I also shoot the BP stuff, but I can get strange looks shooting plates with my latest Hi-cap pistol, and ten switch to my cap-n-ball 1858 Army revolver.. :)

I haven't gotten into blackpowder yet. Some day when I have the cash, but thats not an option now. I don't think you are weird at all.
YES! Someone who truely understands what life is about! I have built a flint .54, .50,.45, .32, and 20 gauge. I love them as much as my AR's. Unfortunately there is usually some asshat at the range yelling "What is that smell!" |
