I've sold my car three times now and each time a new excuse as to why they couldn't follow through.  The last guy came the closest to buying... talked to him on the phone, he was going to come by this week, then nothing.  Meh... reported every one of them for non-payment so I could get all my fees refunded.  Such a waste of time but I don't really want to sell the car that badly so I suppose I don't mind the abuse.

I think I've seen "$500 due immediately by paypal" on ebay motors auctions.

Is that not an option for you?

I had a deposit stipulated but it's not like you can force people to pay it.

I didn't get burned unless you count time wasted as burned.  It's annoying but I think it's pretty common to have people "win" your auction and then bail.  People are dicks.

Bought and sold several vehicles on eBay. Most recent was a pickup that ended up selling to a local buyer. He found the eBay auction through my CL post. I told him he must bid and win to buy locally. Once the auction was complete we settled everything as would be held through a regular FTF transaction. All good that way. Previous sale was done through eBay to a dealer. Shipped the vehicle. Was a little bit of a pain, but netted the dollar amount I wanted so I was happy.

Hope it all works out for you OP!

I'd put an immediate paypal transaction of $500 to $1000 at auction end or they violate the bid.
then you can relist it the next day..I've always done Saturday or Sunday evening closes on my auctions and I've done
nearly 1000..cars, gunstuff, some collector items over the years. It has off set my income for a time but once they got
hinky with gun stuff and  the back and forth nonsense of it. I got reluctant and haven't done any in a couple of years.

The seller can require immediate payment on "regular" eBay items, but I don't know if cars can be done the same way.

Fwiw, I've sold two motorcycles and one car and everything went fine. Neither of the motorcycle buyers wanted to test ride when they picked up the bikes, though. It was weird. The second one was a kick-only, rigid bobber with 20" ape hangers, and I damn near had to force the buyer to take it for a ride. He was scared to death that he was going to drop it.

I sold my 08 VW R32 on eBay. We ended up doing the deal outside of eBay, but he flew in from out of state and drove it home.

Their fee is $125.  That's not really that much.

Unless something has changed since I last sold a vehicle on ebay, they charge a listing fee ($125) and a "final value fee" which is a percentage of the selling price, along with additional fees for reserve auctions, too many pictures, etc. Not to mention the additional percentage they get if you accept payment via PayPal.

It's only 125 plus your listing fee.  They don't charge a final value fee on top of that.

I've sold 2 cars and a motorcycle without incident. All to out of state buyers, I did have the $500. deposit stipulation in my auctions. I guess luckily for me all the buyers honored my terms. I have seen the decline of both E-Bay and Craigslist in the past few years, too many games, kids, and liberals (something for nothing type of folks) on both for my liking...... Good luck on the 4th attempt.....

I'm going to give it one last attempt on ebay this week and if I get dicked around again, I'll just keep the car and make it louder and more obnoxious.  ('02 Z/28)

Yes, and it was super smooth, luck mostly, it sold in a couple of hours of listing it to a guy a few miles away.

Bought 3 motorcycles on ebay over a few year period and had them shipped. One of them was clearly an undisclosed theft recovery bike.

I've sold 3 vehicles(Suburban,Toyota Previa, M-B ML-320) plus a motorcycle.  No issues.

The Suburban ended up being local, he was as scared as I was, but I had my conceal carry and was packing for the tranaction.  We met at Target, he gave me remaining money, I signed title and he drove home.

The Previa ended up being semi local.  I ended up driving the vehicle to pick up the new owners at the train station.  They drove the Van 3.5 hours home.

On the M-B ML-320.  We had some issue with money transfer, but I stated that I would not release the vehicle unless the funds showed up in my bank.  and at the last hour before the 18 wheeler came to pick it up. the funds were transfered.  Funny that the owner didn't really care about title on this.  When the truck company came to pick up vehicle, I asked why, the truck driver said that the vehicle is on its way to the dock to a Eastern European country.

Always request deposit based on vehicle cost.

And also full of dead beats. You ask 2k for your car and you will have people trying to offer you 1k or want to do some silly trade shit like offer you $500 cash, a donkey, mating hens and some imitation crab meat.

In all seriousness op I have bought and sold quite a few vehicles on ebay and have always a good experience with it

Bought my 1942 Ford GPW on e-bay.  Drove all the way from Key West to North Oklahoma to pick it up.  Of course it was during a hurricane evacuation which saved me from having to take leave to pick it up.

My poor '01 Sonoma was not at all happy towing the jeep back home.  Four tanks of gas to get there and 11 to get back!  Not to mention I spent the night in P-Cola as Hurricane Ivan (which I had evacuated the Keys to escape) came barrelling into P-Cola the next morning as I drove East!

I've sold a few but they were exotics. I had better luck with Craigslist. I sold from Ebay:

MG MGB-GT, had one flake out on this but second buyer came thru.

Land Rover Defender Pickup diesel: no issues

My 1977 Porsche 911....screw me blind, it sold right away and to a very nice guy but I would give my left one to have it back.

Porsche 912, 1968 type..sold to Arab car buyer from NYC, overnighted me a check and sent his own transport service to pick it up.

Thanks for the stories.  I'm going to try something other than ebay this week, I'm done with ebay for car sales, just not worth the hassle.
