Is it normal for one testicle to be bigger than the other? I'm not having any problems with normal functioning of "Moby", but just today, for some reason, I decided to check on the "tenants" and one is about 25-30% bigger than the other, and is a little tender to touch.

Now, it hasn't been getting near the "exercise" that it used to, and it got quite a workout last night. I wonder if that may have something to do with this.

Either that, or cancer - ack!

I'm no doc, but check both boys over real close for any abnormal lumps of any kind. If you find one, go to a real doc ASAP.

Sorry, they were all lost in a tragic kayak accident.

Seriously, though - it feels like on the north and south part of the right testicle there are these . . . well. . . somewhat painful lumps. However, this has been an issue for about 12 years, and last time I checked with a urologist he said it was normal.

Here is something I found online about this - perhaps this is it:

About 10 to 15 percent of men have varicoceles, or varicose veins, in their scrotum that could feel unusual, painless, or slightly uncomfortable. Again, discomfort or pain is a warning sign that needs to be discussed with a medical provider. Varicoceles can be related to male sterility, but many are harmless.

Link Posted: 2/6/2006 11:47:31 AM EDT
You should go and get it checked out by a doctor. It is normal for one to be a little bigger than the other, but an uncomfortable or painful feeling shouldn't be there. There are some types of testicle cancer where the nut will grow larger than the other. Why take a chance, go and get it checked out.

My nut cancer was a little bump that was painless. I caught it early, so they were able to remove the offending nut. I know others that said that one of their nuts swelled up to a pretty good size.

I'd get it checked out.

Just a guess, but have you been walking with a funny gait lately, like you're out of symmetry?
Link Posted: 2/6/2006 5:19:23 PM EDT
Pretty typical for one to be a little larger.

Cannot rule out CA of course.
Tenderness is likely a little epididymitis but it could be other things. If so, anti-inflammatories are usually adequate. Sometimes antibiotics are required and if this is the case you should be screened for STDs.

Testicular torsion--bad. Vessels supplying testicle get twisted and testicle will die without rapid treatment. Swelling, severe pain, may get red and then testicle dies.
Hydroceles and varicoceles can give a sense of fullness around the testicle. I can tell by palpating but I have a lot of practice.

If there is any question as to diagnosis, or if CA or torsion is supsected, you will need a scrotal US.

I tell guys to check them out monthly. After I examine them, I explain if there is anything abnormal, or that they are normal now, check them tonight and then monthly watching for changes, lumps, bumps, enlargement, etc.

Same exact problem I had a few weeks ago. I was freaking out about it because for a few weeks "they" were just not comfortable no matter what I did. Naturally that made me take a closer look and never realized that one was 2x as big as the other and from always checking myself and worrying, I made them tender and a bit painful. I was glad that I upped my life insurance from 200k to 500k though,

Went and got checked. Everything is good to go.

You're in radiology, right? Around here the same company does it all from x-ray to pet scan. Sounds like a good reason for a base line ultrasound.

Yep...I had one removed in '73.

Mary, excuse me but can you scan my left nut?

A varicocele is the most common cause of testicular atrophy. It is usually harmless but may cause some fertility problems. It is more common on the left side than right. If you notice a small amount of pain on that side after intercourse....or whatever...it could be a varicocele.Testicular cancer is more common in young men (around 19 to 25 or so.)Testicular torsion is excruciatingly painful from what I understand and you would know if that was it. If you haven't had it checked out you should. There is a surgical correction for a varicocele if fertility is a problem. We had 2 kids with out a repair.

Go see the doc dude. As for the guy mentioning the epiditimitus (spelling may be off) I doubt it. I had an epiditimitus when I had my vasectomy. If you get one of those you are definately not gonna 'examine' it. Or even walk upright for that matter. I had a testicular torsion years ago when I was in the Air Force. Got it during a raquetball game. Another problem you may not 'walk' away from. I was carted to the hospital with tears in my eyes in the fetal position. The doc looked at my nads and said 'your hurtin ain't ya?' He reached over and twisted the 'injured' nad around about half a turn and I almost passed out. A few minutes later I felt like a new man. Now I try to take it more easy on the old boys. Anyway, I am a man of the world and I have experience more mishaps than what I have posted. Remember this dude, you only have two. If you can't take care of two well and end up with only one left then you must consider the remaining soldier an endangered species that ain't gonna last long. You really need them both in most opinions.

Good luck,

Wes

Edit to add: I have had my nuts ultrasounded....the proceedure is far from sexual or exciting. Nothing nice about it. Just remember the ultrasound administrator will bring it down if it comes up. My administrator was a female with a male escort. The ultrasound emitter was very cold and so was the transmitter gel. Not to mention the nature of the method required to cause blood flow through your nads. I have also had an injection in my nuts...I screemed it hurt so bad. Macho bullshit is just that...Macho bullshit.

The guy who mentioned epididymitis is me, a board certified, licensed MD. Not all epididymitis is severe. Some is. Like most other medical condiitons there is a spectrum of severity and frequently untreated things can become worse with time.

Certainly here, as in most of these types of threads, there is not enough info to know and a proper history and exam are necessary.

Well, I sure would have taken more cash...!
When I first got into medicine I hated doing rectals on guys. Yecch. As of now, I would do one of those over a pelvic on a female anyday. Too many fat, ugly smelly women with shit running out of their crotch. Seriously. And who screws these hosebags anyhow?
Anyhow, it really puts a damper on my libido and I don't like it. If that gives you any idea how gross they are. I am not sure I can put it into words in all honesty.

Teaching guys to check their nuts though is a real positive thing I do. Don't like checking them but it is okay and a total net positive.

Still sounds like epididymitis to me. And from what you are describing it is going to get a lot worse. I would get checked out before it becomes unbearable.
FWIW, the epididymis is the beginning of the vas deferens as it comes off the top of the testicle. When severe, any contact with any part of the scrotum is exquistely painful. Some are due to STDs, esp Chlamydia. Your wife will love hearing that!

Anyway, get checked out bud. ASAP. Or you are going to have one long weekend.

Epididymitis - woo fucking hoo. Hot baths and some anti-biotics for the next 10 days. So far the only thing that has helped the pain has been getting snonkered on Scotch and Sodas. Made me sleep for 4 hours (nap) on Sunday. But at least I was numb.

Doc - what sort of anti-inflammatory would you recommend? I'm taking Wal-Mart white box Ibuprofin, but will go out and get something else if you recommend. My urologist just prescribed the anti-biotics and hot baths.

How much ibuprofen are you taking?

Are you getting much benefit from the warm baths?

Rest?? ?? ??

You might need some stronger pain meds if it is getting severe.

Thankyou, Thankyou! I'll be here all week! Tip your waitresses! Try the veal!
Really my sense of Humor was one of the things that enabled me to make it through the TC as I did. I had my Urologist Rolling! My Oncologist was about as bad as me, I had a bout with Bleo Rash after the first week, the infusion nurse asked him if he was sure it was the Bleo and he says Well it is either that or Syphillus! She turned about 8 shades of red, Of course he resembled a mad scientist too... While TC is no laughing matter there is no reason to get all morbid either, Hell after Righty was evicted Lefty was talking about putting in a hot tub! I had to get all the construction ideas out of him, with all the room he has now and with Righty not hogging all the food, Lefty can really hang out! He's turned into a real swinger!
