How big do you need the desicant packs?

I may be able to help...

Howvever big is good enough for long term storage in ammo cans.

The silica gel packets assorted lot size from 1" square to 1 1/2" square of "Silica Gel", also known as "Desiccant" (a drying agent) packs. These are 1/2 and 3/4 gram packets.

These should be big enough for an ammo can, ya think?  Or should I throw 2 in each can?

What do you guys do?

50 cal ammo cans are 11" L x 5 1/2" W x 7" D.  I beleive that's 423.5 cubic inches.  That site says a 1 gram packet will protect 6.1 cubic inches.  Something doesn't add up.

FYI,

With walmart getting in hunting coats you may be able to get all the packs you can by asking the person at the counter if you can have them.

I did this and got about 15 last year--they are decent size ~3"x2.5"

they would be thrown away otherwise...

You don't have gun shows in Texas?

Desiccant packs are harder to find for sale, but ammo cans are like Jerky at our gun shows.

About the desiccant, I made my own from Target:

Tidy Cat Crystal kitty litter ($7.46)
Cone shaped coffee filters ($1.99)

Stapler ($already have)

For $10 I can make a ton of them.  I just made some and loaded my cans.  Awesome!

I've usually found cans online for only a couple dollars cheaper than gun shows and "army/navy" stores.  By the time you pay shipping it becomes cost prohibitive.  Plus you can pick your own if you do it FTF.  These cans are surplus and are in assorted condition.  To get cans that seal properly, I'd rather FTF.

As for dessicant? Never looked at da specs.  I just put one or two small packs in each can.

ETA: Found further info regarding dessicant.  Still, I disregard the amount shown since I only use dessicant in cans that do not get opened.
