Looking for any info from those in the system.

I graduate with my PharmD in May  and seriously considering going Active Duty.
They've got pharmacy residency programs I could go to in Ft Lewis, San Antonio, Tripler, or Walter Reed. Direct comish at 0-3. Pay is certainly lower than civy side.

Most likely single and 24 when i graduate.

Anybody have any experience within the system.

Some.  Do it... it's a sweet deal.  Also, go to Sam Houston (BAMC.)

Here's a good thread on this specific topic (Army Pharmacists):
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/archive/index.php/t-400621.html

I don't know what civvie PharmD's make, but be careful in guesstimating that they make "more" than Army PharmD's.

Check out the DOD Military Compensation Calculator for a closer idea to the advantages inherent in military pay.  Remember that your "pay" isn't just your Base Pay, but includes BAS (Basic Allowance for Subsistance) and BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing), both of which are tax free.  You also accrue 30 days of paid leave per year, retire at 50% of your Base Pay in 20 years, and enjoy free medical care and extremely inexpensive dental care.  You also can shop at the Commissary (far cheaper, on average, than civvie grocery stores) and the PX (just a so-so benefit, but tax-free).

Finally, you'll be serving our Nation with your skills.

no no no, finish it civilain, work for the army as a civilian and you will make more dough.  May not be as patriotic, but you still help the right people and there are no strings attached.  Pharmacy automation is a fear of mine... i considered the field myself and pursued nursing instead...now with a phd in nursing.

I understand the civy more money bit. I'm after hospital pharmacy work. (IE the type not replaced by automation) hence the interest in a residency. (I don't see a problem with automation, gets pharmacy out of dispensing and into drug management/drug selection)
Civy hospital pharmacists make 90-105k these days but to get a decent clinical hospital job means at least a 1yr residency getting paid 35-45k for a year with extra long hours.

Army offers to help repay pharm school loans, 30 of my 40k for a 4yr tour in addition to paying me at a full 0-3 rate plus pharmacy special pay while residency training me at one of those 4 listed Army medical centers.

The money end doesn't come up too short for the short term from what i've seen. Only a 4yr commitment if its not for me. Plus from what I've gleaned army puts me into leadership/management side of pharmacy much quicker than civy side which is helpful if i go to that after the army.

Any other thoughts from army or civy professionals is welcome
