I left the TV on for my dogs while I was at the grocery store, and when I came back, my box was dead.

I've had this converter box since the government sent out the vouchers for the free converter boxes when they made the switch to digital broadcasting, so it's over 10 year old technology. Any advancements made on these boxes, or will a cheap one off of Amazon be all I need to get the job done?

I've been reading up on a few I found at this link.

If I'm reading some of these overviews correct, I can plug in my external hard drive, and some can DVR basic antenna shows!

I also like how some you can use an external hard drive to play any media you have saved. That would be nice, since now if I want to watch a movie I have on my hard drive, I have to use my computer to watch them.

ETA: Picks 1, 2, 4, and 6 off that list all look pretty good.

You could buy a tv made in the past 15 years.

I think the new TV's don't need a converter box. Maybe consider putting the $50 or whatever they cost towards a flat screen.

I've got a flat screen TV. Not sure when it was made. It's a Sharp brand, if that means anything.

I am not very tech savvy.

If it was made after 2007-2008 i think it may have a digital tuner.

Not sure when it was made. It's at least 7 years old, so it very well could be new enough. Where would I look to find out?

ETA: If it does have a tuner already, all I need is a remote for the TV. Lost that last time I moved.

Slim, how old is your tv? You should be able to just plug an antenna in. No box needed.

At least 7 years old. I tried plugging the antenna direct into the antenna plug in, all I get is a black screen. Better than that poltergeist looking scramble screen I had with the converter box hooked up.

I lost the TV remote a couple years ago, so I have no way to try and see if I can configure it to scan for channels.

Found the model number on the back of the TV.

Here's the specs I found when I googled the model number. https://www.cnet.com/products/sharp-lc-32av22u/specs/

I'm thinking I don't need a converter box, just a new remote if I'm reading it right.

Just got a new tv for the parents, they had a crt type tv that was narrowing the picture.  We hooked up an HDTV antenna.

They had an analog box and some type of booster that helped with the signal.  It uses 9v wall wart to power it.  Able to pick-up a few more channels.

Guess I need to head to Wal Mart tomorrow for a cheap universal remote then.

I've been using this TV for 6 years with the converter box...

You should have seen the monster it replaced when my brother got locked up. That bitch had a built in VCR and DVD player.

I agree.  That data sez it does DTV channels 2-69 so all you need is a decent antenna.
And a decent antenna is needed for the convertor box also.

I'll bet if you search for your model number and add 'replacement remote' to the search string you'll find one.

By decent antenna, do you mean I need to upgrade my legit as fuck rabbit ears? Yes, I'm talking 2 collapsing metal rods antenna rabbit ears, not one of those fancy new flat "antennas."

Turns out I could have ditched the converter box 6 years ago when I got the flat screen. I'm not tech savvy, and it worked just fine with the converter box like I'd been doing for 4 years with an old dinosaur box TV. This is the thread where we find out how not tech savvy I am.

Hell, I just upgraded to a smart phone last year.

There's a decent chance a cheapish but purpose-designed antenna will help you pick up a few more stations than an improperly tuned set of rabbit ears. Also a decent chance it won't, if there just aren't any more channels available in your area.

No problem. If it is a TV made since 2006ish you should be able to hook up your antenna and pick up digital TV stations just fine. It can be very confusing especially with the black bars on  some shows/commercials and full screen on others.

No need for a new antenna, just get a new remote and plug antenna into it and scan for channels.

I have an old 19 inch TV that was replaced by a smallish (32 inch?) LED a year or two ago and I have not been able to get it going again.

I will have to try the converter box again.  If not, the list near the top shows some with DVR capability.   That would be great to record shows when I can't watch them...or doing other stuff...then watch and fast forward through stupid commercials.

Did you throw the manual away?

Get the model number off the data plate on the back and download the manual for your TV.

ETA: Dude, here the manual for your TV.

Save it to your hard drive do you can reference it. You don't need a converter box. Buy a new remote.

This. New TV's are incredibly cheap. For Christmas, I just bought a 55" UHD flat-screen for $300. You don't need a converter box for digital TV's.

You might be able to do a channel scan with the menu button on the TV.

No menu button on the TV. Stupid fucking remote I picked up is not working. I had to do an auto scan for a code that worked, and I think I need to do that again. It will turn the TV on and off, change Input and volume. But when I go to the menu to try and do basic setup shit, it decides to be a fucking retard and not do shit.

This is pissing me off. I'm about to say fuck it, and get one of the converter boxes with DVR ability just so I can record shit if I'm not going to be home.

If I had a Smart TV, I could. To do that with this TV would require somehow getting it smartified with some wireless shit.

I have a love/hate relationship with technology, right now, I fucking hate it. At least I have my Apple TV, so I got Netflix.
