Columnist Ann Coulter Shocks Cable TV Show, Declaring 'Jews Need to be Perfected by Becoming Christians'

Slash-and-burn columnist Ann Coulter shocked a cable TV talk-show audience Monday when she declared that Jews need to be "perfected" by becoming Christians, and that America would be better off if everyone were Christian.

Coulter made the remarkable statements during an often heated appearance to promote her new book on advertising guru Danny Deutsch's CNBC show "The Big Idea."

In response to a question from Deutsch asking Coulter if "it would be better if we were all Christian," the controversial columnist responded: "Yes."

"We should all be Christian?" Deutsch repeated.

"Yes," Coulter responded, asking Deutsch, who is Jewish, if he would like to "come to church with me."

Deutsch, pressing Coulter further, asked, "We should just throw Judaism away and we should all be Christians?" She responded: "Yeah."

Coulter deflected Deutsch's assertion that her comments were anti-Semitic, matter-of-factly telling the show's obviously upset host, "That is what Christians consider themselves: perfected Jews."

The show transcript of their conversation about Jews appears below:

DEUTSCH: Let me ask you a question. We're going to get off strengths and weakness for a second. If you had your way, and all of your — forget that any of them —

COULTER: I like this.

DEUTSCH: — are calculated marketing teases, and your dreams, which are genuine, came true having to do with immigration, having to do with women's — with abortion — what would this country look like?

COULTER: UMMMMM (pause) ... It would look like New York City during the Republican National Convention. In fact, that's what I think heaven is going to look like.

DEUTSCH: And what did that look like?

COULTER: Happy, joyful Republicans in the greatest city in the world.

DEUTSCH: No, no, no, no, but I'm talking about this country. You don't want to make this country — it's not about Republicans. I'm saying, what would the fabric of this country look like? Forget that the Republicans would be running the show.

COULTER: Well, everyone would root for America, the Democratic Party would look like Joe Lieberman, the Republican Party would look like Duncan Hunter —

DEUTSCH: No, no, no, I don't want — I'm not talking about politically the landscape. What would our — would we be safer? Would people be happier? Would they be more —

COULTER: We would be a lot safer.

DEUTSCH: Would there be more tolerance? Would there be — would women be happier, would the races get along better? The Ann Coulter subscription — prescription. What — tell me what would be different in our fabric of country, because —

COULTER: Well, all of those things.

DEUTSCH: I can give — I can give you an argument there would be more divisiveness, that there would be more hate —

COULTER: Oh, no.

DEUTSCH: That there would be a bigger difference between the rich and the poor, a lot of other — tell me what — why this would be a better world? Let's give you — I'm going to give you — say this is your show.

COULTER: Well, OK, take the Republican National Convention. People were happy. They're Christian. They're tolerant. They defend America, they —

DEUTSCH: Christian — so we should be Christian? It would be better if we were all Christian?

COULTER: Yes.

DEUTSCH: We should all be Christian?

COULTER: Yes. Would you like to come to church with me, Donny?

DEUTSCH: So I should not be a Jew, I should be a Christian, and this would be a better place?

COULTER: Well, you could be a practicing Jew, but you're not.

DEUTSCH: I actually am. That's not true. I really am. But — so we would be better if we were — if people — if there were no Jews, no Buddhists —

COULTER: Whenever I'm harangued by —

DEUTSCH: — in this country? You can't believe that.

COULTER: — you know, liberals on diversity —

DEUTSCH: Here you go again.

COULTER: No, it's true. I give all of these speeches at megachurches across America, and the one thing that's really striking about it is how utterly, completely diverse they are, and completely unself-consciously. You walk past a mixed-race couple in New York, and it's like they have a chip on their shoulder. They're just waiting for somebody to say something, as if anybody would. And —

DEUTSCH: I don't agree with that. I don't agree with that at all. Maybe you have the chip looking at them. I see a lot of interracial couples, and I don't see any more or less chips there either way. That's erroneous.

COULTER: No. In fact, there was an entire "Seinfeld" episode about Elaine and her boyfriend dating because they wanted to be a mixed-race couple, so you're lying.

DEUTSCH: Oh, because of some "Seinfeld" episode? OK.

COULTER: But yeah, I think that's reflective of what's going on in the culture, but it is completely striking that at these huge megachurches — the idea that, you know, the more Christian you are, the less tolerant you would be is preposterous.

DEUTSCH: That isn't what I said, but you said I should not — we should just throw Judaism away and we should all be Christians, then, or —

COULTER: Yeah.

DEUTSCH: Really?

COULTER: Well, it's a lot easier. It's kind of a fast track.

DEUTSCH: Really?

COULTER: Yeah. You have to obey.

DEUTSCH: You can't possibly believe that.

COULTER: Yes.

DEUTSCH: You can't possibly — you're too educated, you can't — you're like my friend in —

COULTER: Do you know what Christianity is? We believe your religion, but you have to obey.

DEUTSCH: No, no, no, but I mean —

COULTER: We have the fast-track program.

DEUTSCH: Why don't I put you with the head of Iran? I mean, come on. You can't believe that.

COULTER: The head of Iran is not a Christian.

DEUTSCH: No, but in fact, "Let's wipe Israel" —

COULTER: I don't know if you've been paying attention.

DEUTSCH: "Let's wipe Israel off the earth." I mean, what, no Jews?

COULTER: No, we think — we just want Jews to be perfected, as they say.

DEUTSCH: Wow, you didn't really say that, did you?

COULTER: Yes. That is what Christianity is. We believe the Old Testament, but ours is more like Federal Express. You have to obey laws. We know we're all sinners —

DEUTSCH: In my old days, I would have argued — when you say something absurd like that, there's no —

COULTER: What's absurd?

DEUTSCH: Jews are going to be perfected. I'm going to go off and try to perfect myself —

COULTER: Well, that's what the New Testament says.

DEUTSCH: Ann Coulter, author of "If Democrats Had Any Brains, They'd Be Republicans," and if Ann Coulter had any brains, she would not say Jews need to be perfected. I'm offended by that personally. And we'll have more "Big Idea" when we come back.

(BREAK)

DEUTSCH: Welcome back to "The Big Idea." During the break, Ann said she wanted to explain her last comment. So I'm going to give her a chance. So you don't think that was offensive?

COULTER: No. I'm sorry. It is not intended to be. I don't think you should take it that way, but that is what Christians consider themselves: perfected Jews. We believe the Old Testament. As you know from the Old Testament, God was constantly getting fed up with humans for not being able to, you know, live up to all the laws. What Christians believe — this is just a statement of what the New Testament is — is that that's why Christ came and died for our sins. Christians believe the Old Testament. You don't believe our testament.

DEUTSCH: You said — your exact words were, "Jews need to be perfected." Those are the words out of your mouth.

COULTER: No, I'm saying that's what a Christian is.

DEUTSCH: But that's what you said — don't you see how hateful, how anti-Semitic —

COULTER: No!

DEUTSCH: How do you not see? You're an educated woman. How do you not see that?

COULTER: That isn't hateful at all.

DEUTSCH: But that's even a scarier thought. OK —

COULTER: No, no, no, no, no. I don't want you being offended by this. This is what Christians consider themselves, because our testament is the continuation of your testament. You know that. So we think Jews go to heaven. I mean (Jerry) Falwell himself said that, but you have to follow laws. Ours is "Christ died for our sins." We consider ourselves perfected Christians. For me to say that for you to become a Christian is to become a perfected Christian is not offensive at all.

DEUTSCH: We will let the audience decide then, won't we? Ann Coulter. New book. More "Big Idea" straight ahead.

bwa hahahah.

I don't recall ever having to run off any atheists who want to pass out their version of Chick tracts.

I also don't seem to recall any atheist driven crusades or inquisitions. I've seen communist governments purge religion and install themselves as a form of religion, but that was more driven by a desire for consolidated power rather than a true lack of belief in a god. Communist governments hate competition-so do church leaders.

Hell, you could draw a closer parallel to the Roman Catholic church during the dark ages and the rule of Stalin than most would probably be comfortable with.

Honestly? I think she was wrong to say we ALL need to be Christians. That's a little silly. Heck, getting out of a church parking lot after a long sermon will remind her that we don't all get along 100%, even Christians!

But read the transcript. She was totally goaded by Deutschbag.

If you've ever attended a church service where Messianic Jews are in attendance (Jews that have become Christians and have accepted that Christ is indeed their Saviour), you will often hear them refer to themselves as "completed jews."

Coulter's use of the term was somewhat twisted and can easily be seen as offensive, but I think that had she offered a better explanation of the position that Messianic Jews take it might have been better understood. Not necessarily have been well received by Donnie Deutsch or any other Jewish person, but at least it would have added some much needed context. Like so much of what she says, it's delivered in that elitist and condescending fashion that tends to overshadow what her larger point actually was.

So what? Its a theological position common to the conservative strains of all western religion. She didn't say she hates Jews, she said she thinks Christianity is the most correct religion, and ergo the world would be better if all people belonged to it.

Conservative Christians believe that theirs is the one true path. Liberal Christians are more universal. Same for Judaism and Islam.

Why might that be? Like the Muslims, they seem to have a unique inability to get along without pissing off the majority of whichever country they happen to be living in at the time. I don't know WHY that is, but if you look at history, Jews have been run out of more countries than any other single group of humans. Why is that? Not for a hundred years and not in this country. All prosthelitising means in 2007 in America is "I disagree with you about religion."

Coulter is correct. BTW, Israel and the Jews have no greater friends than Christians in the US.

She is only repeating the words of two of the world's greatest Jews - Jesus of Nazareth and Saul of Tarsus.

"Intolerant" is the word that the other side uses when they face people with strong convictions.

BTW, you are much more likely to be killed, injured, robbed or assaulted by someone who does not follow Christ than by someone who does. Very few people who take the message of Christ Jesus to heart ever go to jail or prison. Mostly it is the irreligious.

I think what Coulter was getting at was not that Christians are perfect, but that the Christian perspective of the Jewish faith is that it is half of the Walnut. Christ is the other half of the Walnut.

I say that because anyone who's spent any length of time in a Christian church is painfully aware that Christians are no more "perfected" as a group than any other identifiable group on the planet.

Not that Coulter's intentions will matter to anyone screeching about this....

I don't know any perfect people, christian or not.

I thought the whole point of christianity is that we are not perfect. Don't christians believe that there is only one perfect person?

I have heard jews say equally scornful things about christianity, but whether it is a chrisitan or a jew or an athiest spouting such nonsense, they are still all making assess out of themselves. The only difference is that Ann Coulter has perfected the art of being an ass, and making money out of it.

Do you really think that's the reason? The best hypothesis I could come up with is the whole "WE are God's chosen people" thing. That seems to be a more likely explanation for why non-Jews get irritated with them.

Of course, it's just as irritating when Muslims or Catholics do it.

I'm not a Christian or a Jew, but any true believing member of any faith would be obligated to answer the question in a similar way to how it was answered by Coulter.

IMAGINARY CONVERSATION:

Me: Would the world be a better place if everyone was a Jew?

Jewish guy: Ummm, well, uh...

Me: Is Judaism the truest interpretation of the word of God?

Jewish guy: I believe it is....

Me: Well wouldn't the world be better off if everyone subscribed to the true word of God?

Jewish guy: It would.

Me: So the world would be better off if everyone was a Jew?

Jewish guy: I guess so.

If you really believe in your religion, and really believe it is the truest word of God, how could you not think other people would be better off if they believed the same way?

She is being sarcastic to show how intolerant the media is when it comes to Christianity as opposed to other religions like the ROP.

She is floating an extremist christian idea out so the hypicrital journalist will bash it all about contrasting that to how they typically defend the extremist values of the ROP, she is counting on the viewer to have enough brains to pick up on this but obviously not all do.

Coulter is genius and routinely uses this tactic.

Irrelevant. If you are mad about someone disagreeing with you on religion because of what someone else did 100 years ago on a different continent then you are being unreasonable.

We are discussing religion. Nothing about it is expected to be reasonable.

Then why should Ann be condemned because someone else wants to be unreasonable?

Simple: you can't.

But applying that logic and reason isn't permitted.

Obviously if you say that you think that people would all be better off if they were Christians what you mean is that you are bundling fagots to burn unbelievers that don't convert.

It's completely impossible to hold the idea that your beliefs are the best way to go and yet hold that opinion peacefully and without causing injury to anyone.

If you really believe in your religion, and really believe it is the truest word of God, how could you not think other people would be better off if they believed the same way?

exactly +1

This guys bias was just about to brim over, talking about putting her as head of Iran, and wiping out the Jews? Quite telling.

Well in his defense what he was getting at was: If she had a 2 million man army, nuclear weapons and a REAL way to persue her warped vision to convert the US to Christianity and the world for that matter thats exactly what would happen. Look at the 30 year war for instance or even WW2. Without just her "Book" and talk show babble, thats exactly what would happen.

And i mean Come on. If you were Muslim and someone was telling you to be Christian, and Christians are more perfect just because they're a different "better" religion than you are, how could you not be offended.

Most christians want people to convert, just like practically every other religion.

I dont see how its offensive.

Because after 2000 years, the Jewish people is tired of hearing that we're wrong.

After 2000 years, the rest of us are tired of hearing about the "Anguish of the Jews".

I'm not even a Jew, and I find that offensive. Jews are, and have been the most persecuted people in history.

thats debatable. Ask Native Americans about persecution.

As far as

what do you expect, every religion thinks that all the other religions are wrong. christians believe jc is the son of god, you think they are wrong.

(disclaimer - I am not christian or jewish)

Of course, it's just as irritating when Muslims or Catholics do it.

I can't personally think of something that pisses off mouthy "Christians" more than when they can't convince you that they're right.
