In November of 2010, President Obama signed an executive order allowing Amtrak to carry firearms as checked baggage on all their trains. While the airlines have been offering this service for years, apparently Amtrak was not allowed to offer a similar service. Thereafter, a new baggage cart showed up at the Fullerton Train Station around Thanksgiving of 2010. According to the station employees, the new cart has a lockable cabinet and is to be used to store and transport any firearm(s) that they receive as checked baggage. Suffice it to say, this very grand and expensive looking cart has not moved since it was delivered in November. Consequently, it seems that those persons who bring guns onto Amtrak trains would prefer to keep them in their immediate possession, rather than go through the inconvenience of checking them. Please note: The photographer is not an Amtrak employee, but had permission to be on the sidewalk in back of the station and this photo is compliment with Amtrak's current photo policy.

I've taken Amtrak once in my life, and that was about 5 years ago.  How bad is the security now... can you just walk onto a train without having anything searched?

No TSA search?  No metal detector?

You're damn right I'm keeping it on me.

You mean no one has hijacked a train yet?

You should unpost this before the TSA finds out about it. Strip searches for everyone

Window dressing for sheep.  I'd prefer to keep my gun either way.

Greyhound is a private concern that turns a profit, so in that, its ahead of most airlines and AMTRAK since its inception.
