Group: Insurgents In Iraq Committing War Crimes

POSTED: 8:17 pm CDT August 2, 2005

LONDON -- Amnesty International said insurgents in Iraq are committing war crimes when they kill civilians, take hostages and torture and kill prisoners.

The human rights group said there's "no honor nor heroism in blowing up people going to pray or murdering a terrified hostage."

Amnesty said those carrying out such acts are nothing less than criminals whose actions undermine claims their cause is legitimate.

The report also said Amnesty recognizes many Iraqis believe U.S.-led troops also have committed grave human rights violations.

In fact, the report released last week charges U.S. forces had failed to minimize risk to civilians by using cluster weapons in bombing residential areas resulting in many civilian deaths.

Call me cynical, but this looks like nothing more than a pathetic reaction to bad press over their Gitmo statements.

Now, they will point to this release for the next 10 + years as "proof" that they are politically neutral.

Without such an esteemed and non-political organization standing up for us, we'd NEVER have known this INCREDIBLE fact!

You mean the insurgents ARE bloodthirsty murdering scumbags like that other bloodthirsty murdering scumbag Bush claims?

OMG! We need to pass a new air-breathing tax IMMEDIATELY to raise sorely-needed funds to rectify the plight of these poor people ASAP!

Well congratulations, AI!

You are just now where the rest of us with an iota of common f*cking sense have been for YEARS.

Welcome to the party.

Bingo.

People keep asking them why they never speak out against the REAL attrocities in the world, as opposed to complaining about the treatment of the Gitmo detainees who are being fed Lucky Charms.

They put out one statement, and now they figure they can resume the propoganda campaign they are running for the other side.

The Bush administration liked Amnesty International until they started talking about US handling of detainees.  Rumsfeld and Cheney both quoted AI reports repeatedly as justification for ousting Saddam.  It's silly to complain that they never speak out against the "real atrocities".  AI has been documenting abuse of humans all over the world for years, and have been harshly critical of a wide range of governments.

AI is even more irrelevant than the UN, and this "press release" will be forgotten within a week.

...and they have been equally as harshly critical about our own.

Either you are a 20-year old Liberal troll to this board, or you have a warped perspective of history.

Amnesty International has a track record of inability to apply perspective on things - and that goes back quite a ways.  What does the Bush administrations use of their reports have to do with anything?  I still run into older AI supporters who rant and rave about the Nicaraguan Contras but sing about the Sandanistas as if they could do no wrong.  Perhaps AI "documented" Sandanista abuses, but they never exactly went out of their way to publicise them.

Maybe it was because left-wingers would be more willing to believe them than the CIA?  You can rest assured that the government does not need AI to tell them who is doing what to whom in the world.

What AI fails to understand is that you can't have an AI without a free society.  Associating the very society that has allowed them to take root and thrive with that of Stalinist Russia is LUDICROUS.  I think even the older AI folks would admit that.
