Our beer fridge died today. Luckily I can replace it with a spare from work.

Planning to gut the dead one, paint it, put some locks on, and use it for ammo storage.

What's the best way to safely remove the motors and wiring without exposing myself to freon or whatever fridges use?

I know some people here did this. Anyone have photos?

No, the beer got moved in time and is still cold.

Why remove it?  You can't use the space where they are.

Just make it lighter and easier to move.

If the coolant is that big a deal I can leave the stuff in it.

Welders gloves and wire cutters.  Cut a copper line then run.  Wait 5 mins for the refrigerant to disperse.  Tear out motor.  That's what I would do.

Saw a whole litter of feral cats roaming through 2 nights ago. And the dog got skunked, again, a week ago.

So I'm okay with this.

The refrigerant isn't toxic, just vent it to the atmosphere outside.  It will be very cold when it squirts out so try not to get it on your skin.

Put on some safety goggles. The Freon will freeze your skin while evaporating, not poison you.

Dibs on ammo,,,,,,,,  so the frig project  will have become irrelevant   so  just send me your ammo  and pay the five buck at the recycle center  to dump it

They are pretty light already. Just stack your ammo in it and close the door. Now, if you were to gut it and put a safe inside the shell, that would be cool.

I did it with a mini fridge several years ago.  Took the compressor out to make it a little easier to tote upstairs.

I would totally do that, but where it would be would stick out too much.

I would pay you $10,000.00 cash on the spot if you let me video record you doing that.

I'd clean it real good with bleach and then let it air dry for a very long time.  Then I'd put a golden rod heater in to dehumidify it.  I shut off a chest freezer we had, dried it out real well, and the door closed accidentally.  It was full of mildew/mold when I opened it back up.

I think a junk fridge should go to the junk place.

Drill a few decent sized holes in the back and that won't happen again.

Just don't vent it in an enclosed space and suck it in for 15 minutes. Fuck the Ozone!

I am pretty sure if you are not a commercial operation that what you release is below reportable levels.  If not, then just the fact that a fridge leaked down and quit makes you an offender.  So send me a $5,000.00 retainer, and I'll go buy a Craigslist fridge and video it for you.  Send the money to Johnny_Reno to hold, the only moderator that you can trust.

Five bucks is cheap.  Here it's $20 or $25 and the doors have to be off in case little kids climb the 8' fence and lock themselves in it

New Hampshire has sure gone to hell in the 47 years I've been here.

my only concern would be that a regular refrigerator could not hold the weight.

anyway, related to the topic:

To me that would be cooler if you used the vending machine to hold your ammo boxes.... and you dispense a box by pressing the appropriate button.
