Looking for ways to reduce what I spend with Verizon a month. I'd be fine with just internet. Tell me more about cutting the cord and the best way to do it. Girlfriend likes shows on Animal Planet, Nat Geo, TLC, Lifetime, etc. There are one or two shows I like on AMC and Comedy Central and then some of the stuff on the major networks (Fox, CBS, ABC, etc.) that I never really get to watch. Can I retain the ability to get that content when wanted?

Get Roku.  You'll have access to Amazon's programming and a lot more.  My Roku Stick also runs Amazon more reliably than my Fire Stick.

I'm happy with my Fire Stick. Still wouldn't be able to cut cable though. Football and baseball are a bit to precious to me.

With that said how much are stand alone subscriptions to lets say HBO and Showtime that you can access through the Fire Stick?

Look into PlayStation Vue, DirectTV Now, and Sling TV. They all have cable packages for ~$20/mo that you can play on a fire stick. Those channels are almost certainly included.

I'm getting close to cutting cable myself...

ROKU is the way. Every channel you listed plus a lot more is on SlingTV for $20.00 a month. Use antenna for local channels. I live in BFE and get 12 antenna channels. Also antenna is uncompressed 1080p.

Check out AppleTV. Last time I looked they offered some good annual deals with good channel coverage.

Sling has a deal for a free Roku if you prepay $20, works great.

Just dropped Directv. Using Amazon Fire downstairs that's hard wired to the router, very good quality. Roku with sling upstairs for kids. It gets Amazon and Netflix as well. You pretty much need to be a Prime member to get most movies or shows for free.

Don't bother with the Fire Stick. I had 2 and they just don't have enough power. Constantly lagged, stuttered, and locked up. I bought a couple Fire TVs to replace them and everything is smooth and just works.

We recently cut the cord with Comcast.  You didn't list anything live or about sports so you'll probably be okay.

At this point we mainly just use Amazon prime and Hulu plus subscriptions.

The biggest "gotcha" is that even though they list a lot of channels (for us SCIENCE channel is the big one) they don't have all the programming available. Many shows are just missing entirely, so you get a really cut down selection and nothing live. Hulu also lists FS1 but again its nothing live and a tiny subset of their programming (like three shows maybe).

Apple tv has nothing at all that's free from what I can tell.

Honestly though its just television, I can survive fine without any of it.

Another vote for Amazon FireTV. I've had several AppleTV's and ROKU's over the years, ant the FireTV is by far the best in my opinion. Don't get the stick...not powerful enough. Get the FireTV box with voice control and don't look back.

Fire stick and prime looks awesome....

If you can't get 1.5+ mbs, it's buffering constantly though.

I'm going this route. I have 2 sticks and they are laggy and slow, especially in areas where wifi strength is marginal. Everything I've heard the Amazon Fire TV doesn't suffer as much. Plan on putting it in the room where I have cat 5 access to plug in and putting the fire sticks in rooms with better signal strength.

I've got the stick in my bedroom and a fireTV in the living room. The fireTV is a much better experience. No lagging or freeze ups. If you have an android tablet, you can install kodi/exodus to try it out before buying an amazon device to see if you like it.

Get the fire tv, the fire stick doesn't have enough horsepower, I have both the fire tv is in the living room the other is in the bedroom. Don't go the roku if you ever want to get into kodi. The fire tv 2 is the king of the hill, it's fast, has great processor, and memory, runs a version of Android, and you can sideload android apps on it.

I've got kodi, ipvanish vpn, chrome, and several other useful apps on mine. I use directv now for $35/month, and the wife is in love with kodi. Get one of these and you can use it for a game controller, browse the web, and input on the fire tv.

Almost forgot to mention the hardware is good enough on the fire tv 2 to play all the high end android games, plus expandable storage, and 4k video capable all for $100.

Get an android streambox with kodi.  There really is no reason to get anything else.

The new fire stick works much better than my old gen 1 fire stick and just as well as the fire tv we also have. I would buy the gen2 fire stick again.

I meant to say that to, the gen 2 stick is still good but the fire tv is better. Definitely stay away from both gen 1 options.

I recommend Roku over FireTv. The Amazon devices are too Amazon centric (duh), Roku is a bit more neutral with all services.

Just here to mirror the notion that the fire TV blows the fire stick out of the water.

Thanks guys. I'll look into it more in depth. Neither of us watch sports so I don't care if I can't get live sporting events. My concern was more for channels and live TV from the channels I listed without having to pay an astronomical amount a month.

With no cable how do you get a signal to your Playstation?

I recently cut my cable, and after some trial and error I went with the Nvidia Shield, and PS Vue. I also have a Roku Premier in another room. Between the Roku's, and
the Shield I would choose the Shield every time.

We just switched to Fire TV and Sling and started saving about $120 a month. Watched the new Walking Dead with it last night.

Had a Roku, got the Fire TV box for Kodi.  I also have Prime.

Admittedly, I play old school video game emulators on it more than anything else.

Been off cable since 2010.  Pretty satisfied with the Fire TV box.

Cut cable this past Friday. The bill with just cable and Internet had peaked to over $150/month. Kept Internet, and signed up for sling and Netflix, and the total will be less than half of that.

Kodi is the best thing out there by far. You just need a medium to use it on. Fire TV stick, Roku or laptop with a HDMI cable. Kodi has everything you need

Yep, I can watch anything on it.  Folks complaining about them probably have something going on that would cause issues.  I have no issues with my sticks or the TV.  I use the ATV to stream off the phone if I cant find on the stick or fire tv.

Somebody really needs a better name for their service. You do not have to have a PlayStation to use PlayStation Vue, it is a surface available through various boxes.

I have no issues with my Fire sticks. Kodi with Fusion is kind of demanding, and it works perfectly. Why everyone isn't doing this is beyond me

My only gripe with Fire TV is that there is no app to use digital video codes (such as Vudu, ect...) with that is supported by Amazon. So, if you buy a movie that has a digital copy available, you can't use it.
