I took apart an alt to have its covers polished but now that its back together, whenever I turn it the rear bearing squeaks.

Is this bad? What can I do about it?

COuld be you have something too tight, one of the bolts/screws

COuld be there is diff. length bolts/screws and you have them mixed up and the longer one is hitting something.

Personally id take it back apart and look to see if there is any wear that looks unusual.

Could be the BELT is too tight or misaligned also. Id check this first.

sometimes those bearings will squeak when dust gets in there.  Kinda like your brake pads can do.

The bearing seal is sqeaking.  That is a BAD thing because it means the seal is dry and if you operate it, the seal could burn out rapidly.

Take it apart, LIGHTLY brush the dirt from the seal and give it a LIGHT coat of grease.  An old , soft toothbrush works great here.  Then wipe off all the grease you can see.

Most seals only LIMIT the flow of lubricant.  Some lubricant needs to be between the seal and the sealing surface, otherwise the seal lip will be destroyed, allowing dirt to get inside.
