Alito hearings prove it: pro choice is the politically popular position
Putting aside the question of consitutional law and the confirmation of Alito, there seems little doubt that the anti abortion senators know that their position is unpopular.

There's a reason why Alito won't comment on abortion, a reason why the republican senators....who ask for Roe to be overturned and are anti abortion....won't press him, and it isn't because Alito would lose the confirmation if he says he is going to reverse Roe.

The republicans want plausible deniability of whatever Alito does. If he votes to reverse Roe, they want to avoid the deluge of democrat electoral victories that will occur at every level of government for the next twenty years over choice issues by not having an explicit vote for an explicit Roe reverser. If he doesn't, and I think they hope he doesn't, they can shrug their shoulders at their nutbag supporters and milk the anti abortion fervor for another twenty years.

Compare the dems, who are staking out explicit positions. They aren't scared of being seen as having abortion rights AS A LITMUS TEST for the high court. They know that abortion rights are a winner for them. They aren't hedging.

So take the logic to it's conclusion and INSIST, INSIST, INSIST that dems go on the record as demanding assurances from Alito or filibuster. IT's a no lose proposition.

Maybe it's just because I live on the East Coast in a big city, but I find that about 90% of the people I talk to about this issue are solidly on the pro-choice side, regaurdless of their political affiliation.

Maybe I'm an asshole, but every day I see hundreds of people who I think should have been aborted.

Yeah, 'cause once a precedent is set, it can never be reversed.  Just like Plessy v. Ferguson...

If being Pro-choice was so popular, why are Democrats so afraid of it becoming a democratic decision?  Overturning Roe v Wade will not outlaw abortions.  All it will do is put the matter to the states where it can be decided through the elective process.

So named because an illegal can come, have a kid, and be legal to stay.

I got it, it is a dead on description.

Can somebody tell me how one judge can reverse a decision if no challenging case is being considered by the court? Or is all this a bunch of crap with absolutely no merit?

He can't. However, regardless of what you think about abortion, Roe is the gravest insult ever visited upon legal reasoning and the English language. I give you my word, it is the absolute worst piece of legal "reasoning" I have ever encountered, and I have litigated against malignant dishonest asshats of all shapes and sizes.  It was also overtaken by medical science before the ink was dry on the first printing of the opinion. There are plenty of reasons unrelated to the basic "pro-life/pro-choice" dichotomy for revisiting it and essentially superseding it. Basically, a coalition of religious rightists and honest Satan-worshipping Communists could very easily unravel the whole thing, using its own text and "rationale" to restrict abortions after the first  X weeks to situations where the alternative was death or grave disability of the mother.

Hence, they ask for allegiance to Roe, which has been turned by subsequent decisional law into a blanket guarantee of abortion on demand, rather than for allegiance to the principle of Constitutional privacy on which Roe pretends to hang.

Statements after "He can't" are just my opinion. YMMV.

The real injustice is the fact that Roe v. wade was decided before medical science proved that the fetus wasn't just a blob of tissue after just weeks of gestation. In fact the humanity of the BABY in utero is in fact Human and has feeling and is a seperate being that should have the full protection of the Constitution and Bill of rights as the rest of us.

Because 99.999999999% of people believe that if Roe is overturned, abortion will be instantly become illegal across the country.

Say anything not politically correct and your career, maybe even your life will be destroyed by the scumbag socialists. That's the bottom line. And why the 2nd Amendment is more important then ever.

God willing, those statist SOBs will regret Roe when 5 SCOTUS justices realize that even though the original numbskulls carefully avoided the 9th Amendment, it is the only possible Constitutional basis for a right to privacy - and what else is necessarily included, if abortion is. Think about what a privacy right that encompassed the right to extinguish a viable fetus (as the Roe [as subsequently interpreted] right purports to) would do to drug laws, exceptions to the warrant requirement, seatbelt laws, bans on possession of anything, seditious conspiracy laws ("we were just talking about killing viable humans!") et c. et c.
