FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. (CP) _ A man will go to jail after he tore off a piece of his underwear, stuffed it into the gas tank of an RCMP cruiser and lit it on fire.
The blaze sparked by Alex Contois on April 25, 2004, in Janvier, Alta., destroyed the vehicle and damaged another police car.
Contois, 22, was originally charged with arson, but the Crown reduced the charge to mischief as part of a plea agreement.
Justice Jack Watson of Alberta Court of Queen's Bench handed Contois a five-month jail sentence and a $10,000 fine. Watson said he credited Contois for taking ''his medicine like a man'' and noted he suspected others in the community encouraged him to set the fire.
The crowd, he said, likely found the blaze ''entertaining.'' Watson also said he hopes the RCMP won't sue him for the full damages to the cars. (Fort McMurray Today)
