The U.S. Geological Survey says a revised estimate for the amount of conventional, undiscovered oil in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska is a fraction of a previous estimate. The group estimates about 896 million barrels of such oil are in the reserve, about 90 percent less than a 2002 estimate of 10.6 billion barrels. The new estimate is mainly due to the incorporation of new data from recent exploration drilling revealing gas occurrence rather than oil in much of the area, the geological survey said. Wiki on the director os the U.S.G.S. quoted in the story...
In July 2009, McNutt was announced as President Obama's nominee to be the next director of the United States Geological Survey and science adviser to the United States Secretary of the Interior.[14] The Senate unanimously approved her nomination on October 21.[15] She is the first woman director of USGS since its establishment in 1879.[14] Secretary Ken Salazar endorsed McNutt for the position.[14] In a television interview following Obama's announcement, McNutt said:
"Many other countries are far ahead of the U.S., in installing wind farms, installing solar panels, moving to alternate energies, and in preparing their populations for the decision-making necessary to cope with climate change."[16] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcia_McNutt |

How exactly do they estimate something that is undiscovered, anyway?
|
|
agrees with .gov agenda
same thing just happened with the oil reserves around the falkland islands. BP sends a bunch of survey ships, comes back and says "no oil after all" Bullshit. Peak oil is a sham

How exactly do they estimate something that is undiscovered, anyway? Venture a guess- A. They know what is producing in the wells that border the region. B. The subsurface geology is probably very similar to the areas that are currently being worked. C. Plug in a formula that says something like 4 out of 10 holes drilled produce "X", multiply that by the area of the suspected deposit = amount of oil in reserve. |

Subtract every well that might kill a mouse, which would be 9 out of 10 in this case. |

Perhaps the real plan is to render the arctic wildlife for their body fat and leave the oil reserves alone? |

Gee...ya think? NOTHING this administration does surprises me anymore...they will resort to any tactic to bring down the U.S. as we know it... So all this is a Obama conspiracy?.... Needs more tinfoil... From the article... "Recent activity in the NPRA, including 3-D seismic surveys, federal lease sales administered by the Bureau of Land Management and drilling of more than 30 exploration wells in the area provides geological information that is more indicative of gas than oil," the geological survey said. Might be hard to fake all that.... Sounds like in 2002 they assumed it was all oil and now found out a lot of it is just natural gas... |

Bp found more than they could handle and now chevron is setting up a big play in the gulf. |

Having it be natural gas is not a BAD thing per se, but when you make strategic military policy off the assumption that it was all oil.... that is when shit goes south.

If they refuse to drill, I'm heading north with a shovel. No shit. If the land is so worthless, why not allow some private enterprise to explore up there to confirm once and for all. Or better yet, lease the mineral rights....free market and all...if there is nothing there, no one will do any damage to the sacred cows and they will take some money away from private businesses like they love to do. Win-Win. Do it. Do it. |

SA is too close logistically to the USA to make an oil run for say China, China can't take on RUS YET ME is to crowded and to many big players so that leaves Africa and yes Africa will win again |

Since China is moving in Africa, my question is this; will anyone care? We have reserves and are close to SA, the Russians have their own and as you said the ME is too crowded. The Euros may be interested, but short of denying a strategic resource to a potential enemy, I don't see the US getting involved in China's Africa play. Interesting precept none the less. |

Note that the report mentioned conventional oil. That does not necessarily mean diddly squat to the total amount of hydrocarbon fuel there. She is mentioning that the mix of oil and gas is different. If we factor in natural gas liquidation and oil shale (neither are conventional), we might take the previous conventional oil reserves and multiply by 100.
