I saw a Smithsonian documentary about the 747 recently. They had an Air Force One pilot talking about the plane, and when he mentioned the classified defenses Air Force One has... well I don't know why, but I got the distinct impression that it might have offensive weaponry on board. Not just countermeasures, but offensive weapons. The more I thought about it, the more it made sense. I figure it would be fairly easy to retrofit a 747 with a retractable gun turret or a weapons bay with missiles.

If it did, no one that knew would talk about it here.

speculating, of course.

I'm thinking that Air Force One would fly with fighter escort(s).

It doesn't always. In fact, it frequently doesn't.

When threatened, it turns into a big-assed robot.

I'm not sure about Air Force One, but this is President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho's plane....

I wouldn't imagine it would, but I'm pretty sure the fighter escorts have that capability...;)

Beware the 747 out of the sun.

A gun turret would be defensive. No, why would it have offensive weapons?? Unless you consider the "football" onboard as an offensive weapon.

That is the space shuttle

Well they would certainly be defensive, but I get what you mean. Weapons rather than countermeasures.

I don't know and imagine no one is saying, but I do know that Hawker Siddeley Nimrods were retrofitted with Sidewinders during the Falklands ass kicking.

It has an escape pod.

I'm sure it has flares or chaff to distract incoming. I wonder if it has any jamming capabilities?

I'd be shocked if it didn't.

I think it would be easy to add some sidewinders inside a hidden weapons bay. I doubt it has radar-guided missiles, but IR missiles would be an easy mod.

They took the internal weapons bay out when they put the mini putting green in.
Link Posted: 10/1/2014 11:32:23 PM EST
No weapons, no escape pod. At least that is the "official" reply. That doesn't mean it doesn't have these things, only that they declare it as such.
Link Posted: 10/1/2014 11:34:30 PM EST
There is a water bed in the nose. When under attack the water is pumped outside to make a cloud the plane can hide behind.

Not sure if it would be allowed into other country's airspace if it did. But then again, that would be quite an international incident if they refused.

Sidewinders are awesome, and relatively easy to retrofit or integrate into an aircraft. I think everyone should have them!

I think he's thinking in terms of "passive" vs. "active" defense.

Passive defense being defending yourself via evasion, stealth, maneuvering, armor, countermeasures, etc. (Like popping flares/chaff, radar jamming, etc).

Active Defense being weapons that defend yourself by killing what is a threat to you.

Rumor has it that chaff and flare countermeasures have been replaced by "K-FOD" systems (Kinetic Foreign Object Defense)
dispensers.

System is activated by a "Bogey" - thousands of golf-balls are dumped out a special deployment system into then enemies flight path.

What would you shoot at, exactly? I doubt any country is stupid enough to shoot it down with a fighter, which leaves guerrillas with shitty ancient Soviet MANPAD systems.

This might sound stupid but...It's a giant flying house. How hard could it be to disguise a rotary launcher for some AIM-9's? I don't know either way, but it would make some sense to have offensive weapons.

Glad I am not the only one who laughed about at the OP.

OP, you should feel bad.

I'm not saying its accurate, but I haven't seen into the nose of AF1 and neither have you...
Link Posted: 10/2/2014 12:59:16 AM EST
AF-1 is designed with high tech countermeasure systems - I do not know the specifics, but you can bet that it has chaff and flare dispensers at a minimum, along with some sort of dazzler system to confuse laser guided missiles.
