NewsMax senior U.N. correspondent Stewart Stogel reports from New York City.
U.S. State Department sources tell NewsMax that Zalmay Khalilzad will arrive in New York next week to assume the post of United States ambassador to the United Nations.
The Afghan native replaces the controversial John Bolton who left the post in December after Bolton's recess appointment by the White House expired.
Khalilzad comes to the United Nations after nearly two years as the ranking U.S. diplomat in war-torn Iraq.
In Iraq, Khalilzad presided over the establishment of the nation's first elected parliament and most recently the beginning of Bush's military surge in Baghdad.
He also participated in several regional conferences regarding Iraq's security that were also attended by Iranian diplomats with whom he met.
