I just want to ad a caption to some pictures I have taken....no idea how to do it, I dont have any high end photo editing programs

Depending on what you want, you can do anything from MS Paint to downloading GIMP for free and adding captions. Do you have any programs for photo editing?

You can use gimp which is free.

But what's the goal of the captions? Are you displaying these as prints? Or is this web display? If web, just caption below the image on the web page. If print, I'd set the image within a border on the print, and caption on the border.

Learn how to use GIMP.  Its easy.  And free.  Just use the Canvas Size tool in the image menu to expand the canvas.  Unlock the height-width ratio, and add a few pixels to the height.  



Or make a new file with a white backround, with the new file being the exact width of your photo, and the height is your image height + space for caption.  Then insert the photo as a new layer.  Actually, I think that way is easier.
