"The behemoth Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is seeking up to 7,000 select fire (meaning that they are capable of both semi-automatic and automatic fire) 5.56x45mm North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) personal defense weapons (PDWs) on top of the hundreds of millions of hollow point rounds they recently acquired."

7,000 5.56mm rifles for a department that has 216,000 employees?
Oh teh noes. Shit, that's not even enough rifles to properly arm ICE. |

Most of their employees have more need for a pencil than a weapon...... I dunno, but they have a lot of guys who use guns. And they're like any other mechanical device. They wear out. Not that I don't expect this topic to be viewed any less stupidly then the DHS ammo purchase one (despite my vain attempts to educate people about what IDIQ means). ETA: If you want to find out how many they've already bought, start searching the contract award listings. They should be in there. |

Me thinks those guns won't be intended for non-citizens mostly. Their intended enemy isn't foreigners. They've proven that time again whenever you fly. DHS is making air travel a touching experience...
And yeah, I'm LE in a border state.

Given the current administration and the folks the foreigner in chief has put in places of authority, I can see no good coming from purchases like this.

Most DHS employees have never touched, let alone qualified, with a long gun. Some places dont even have them in their armory.
New agency needs to build its armories. Having two shotguns to qualifiy hundreds of people a year sucks. |

Guns dont win wars by themselves.

Any time a contract like this is secured for a large number of guns, there are more than one three letter agency can dip into it. They end up with the bulk of them (usually), but some guns will go here and there.

Math Fail in the article
Furthermore, they state that every firearm will be tested with a whopping 4,000 rounds, meaning that 28,000 rounds will be spent just testing the firearms before they are put into service. Government Logic- 7,000 x 4,000= 28,000= Obamanomics 101 |

And just like the ammunition purchase, this is a group purchase for all of the DHS agencies. The Coast Guard alone could use 7000 new rifles. |

Law enforcement buying guns?
Wow - that is shocking news, OP. |

Between the USCG and the USBP (both under DHS), this isn't a big number. UP TO 7,000 (but likely fewer, or that 7k stretched out over a few years) isn't that big of a deal.
Meanwhile, the paranoid types on here will bitch about this (these are gonna be used on citizens!!1!), and in another thread bitch about "why aren't we securing the border!!!1! Give the BP the equipment they need!" |
