Three people have been taken to the hospital including one employee who is a manager, said Reno Police Lt. Mohammad Rafqat. Wal-Mart headquarters is issuing information that one is critically injured and other two not so. "There’s no fatalities as of yet,” Rafaqat said. There are 30 to 40 local, federal and regional police on scene. Reno SWAT members are inside and assembling to negotiate with the man who is believed to be holed up in a northwest corner office. As yet police have made no visual contact with the man. "He may be an employee of Wal-Mart, we have some information of who he may be,” Rafaqat said. Between this and the dude passed out at the wheel next to my office an hour ago (likely DUI), it's been an exciting morning. |

Word from a coworker who just talked to an on scene officer is that there is hostages. No way to confirm it though.

Quoted: Hmmm, time to gin up a conspiracy theory. I'll give it a go. Passed out guy (POG) and shooter guy (SG) planned a robbery of the Nugget, targeting the Professional Engineer exam going on there now. They planned this to the last detail. Unfortunately (fortunately?), they lost their map. POG stopped at the liquor store next to my office for directions, ended up waste deep in a bottle of Jim Beam. Meanwhile, SG went to walmart for some winchester white box and some Copenhagen, was spotted by a CCW holder, who bladed at 45*. SG knows he's blown, and decides to go out with a bang. How am I doing? |

Anyone want to explain the difference? LC |

WTF is a "Muhammad Rafquat"? Didn't this used to be America? |

Reportedly he is in custody. With 30 to 40 cops there, they could have just walked to him in a line and taken him, firing or not. What specific tasks do the officers do when you have that many around waiting on some dumbass with a gun? |

What specific tasks do the officers do when you have that many around waiting on some dumbass with a gun? Keeping the area secure, so that the suspect can't escape. Keeping people from walking into the situation. Gathering information on the layout of the area the suspect is in, or who the suspect is. Covering the entry and exit points. Preparing a plan, and having the ability to force entry from one or all the exit/entry points. Negotiating with the suspect. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––- If it is a barricaded suspect, either with or without hostages, if they can communicate with the suspect, negotiations will get the suspect talked out without any injury, or violence about 99.99% of the time. Rushing in, to shoot it out with the suspect, endangers the lives of hostages, it a last resort measure. |
