My thought exactly. Once, some guy who came shooting with us had an ND into the air; he didn't think it was all that big a deal because we were way out in the country. Idiot.

A 22 rim fire will travel 3.5 miles a 30-06 will travel 9+ miles. Think about it!!!

The morons all around me are shooting everything from firecrackers to deer rifles - maybe helmets and vests should be in the wardrobe next year.

No sir, I have not.

What does it say?

It says a .30 cal 150 gr. bullet fired in the pure vertical will stabilize with around a 300fps. return terminal velocity when all things such as air density and bullet shape are factored.

I didn't make it up, it's on page 514.

peeps across the street are shootin in the air now in their drunking stuppor.  if one shell enters our house i am prepaired to shoot back.  under threat of attack.

If and when i touch a few off,
I shoot my rounds into the ground.

problem solved

In an experiment, a 180 gr. bullet was fired straight up and upon landing made a 1/16" dent in a pine board. Bullets fired straight up are not especially dangerous. An object weighing only 1 or 2 ounces falling from even a very great height can only gain a limited amount of energy. Its terminal  velocity will be around 140 mph and no more. The problems arise when a bullet is fired in a more horizontal direction, at ,say, 30 degrees. Then the bullet will travel much farther and retain much more of its initial muzzle velocity. Of course, most of the yahoos who fire into the air do not fire straight up.

Here in NW Metro Atlanta, we had quite a lot of fireworks, and some gunfire.  Also two rounds of what was either a cannon at distance, or large shoulder-fired closer in.

It was heartwarming in a way...  If only a minority of gun owners are unsafe enough to put that volume of noise in the air, then my area has many more shooters in it than I'd ever thought.

I think it was 2 years ago a member posted this after new years. It was his car.

If you want to shoot a gun on new years just use a shot gun with bird shot. Point it straight up. The pellets fall harmlessly to the ground. I have had pellets hit me while bird hunting. You can barley feel it.

OH here is my view on shooting into the air:

Accomplishes NOTHING
WASTE of time
WASTE of ammo
You look like those moronic terrorists that shoot into the air.

GET LAID INSTEAD! More fun and you feel better about yourself.

easy slugger. no one will shut down OUR skeet clubs because we use BIRDSHOT!  thats 7 1/2, 8, or 9 shot. read a few posts above mine to see what it does on the way down.

if you save and work hard, maybe you too can buy one of those $3000 shotguns.
