A good friend of mine who owns a surveying business stumbled across a German MP40 SMG while working yesterday. He saw what turned out to be the pistol grip sticking out of the mud. Thinking it was some sort of old farm tool he started digging it out.
He was surprised when he realized it was a gun and called me for identification. I've yet to see pics but he said it's rusted to the point where none of the parts move. From what he's told me it seems to be complete with the original under folder, plastic grip panels, and rotted leather sling. |

Whoa, I never knew the Germans had managed to push that far west. |

He better go get a tax stamp slapped on that thing before BATFE come to shoot his dog |

lol.. probably belonged to some biker in the 60s or something Or, a vet who brought it back after WWII, only to realize it was an illegal, unregistered MG. So, being reasonably in fear of being jailed, he decided to bury it, rather than turn it in to the cops. That, or it was somebody who "lost it in a boating accident" before PVC pipe was invented and who couldn't get hold of wax paper and cosmoline. Have yor buddy look around a bit more, maybe he'll find a buried ammo fort. |
|
I'll assume he "contacted authorities immediately" instead of putting it behind his truck seat and keeping his mouth shut?

Damn difficult to put down once they are out of the ground. |

Why can't I ever be this lucky
The MP-40 is the one Class III goody I would actually spend money on, they are simply amazing ETA: Time to let that thing soak in a tub of rust remover |
|
I am a surveyor and the only gun I ever found was 38 special Rohn revovler that was rusted shut.
It did give off a pretty good magnectic signal for my metal detector. |
|
Wonder if it could be one of those model guns that the Japanese made? A kid playing may have lost it...
|
|
|
Could be a reenactors gun. I hope someone wasn't stupid enough to lose one, but there are alot of WWII reenactments in Kentucky.

Hey, just trying to get a clear look at the serial number to determine if its legit or not. Side note- would it be possible to keep possession, and demil the receiver somehow, and make a wall hanger out of it? or would it have to be completely destroyed? |
|
could be one of those metal replica blank firing ones as well... they have been around for a while.

Tagged for the pics of a half sized pot metal toy with an orange tipped barrel.

Relax everyone. He called the Sheriff's Dept yesterday who is contacting BATFE. The most likely scenario is that it was a bring back that someone decided to bury at some point.

They used UFO's to transport Wehrmacht and SS troops and equipment across the Atlantic. Every arfcommer should know this. |

It happened after their amphibious invasion of the west coast. |

See if it's on the National Registry or stolen, if aint it's going to have to be destroyed

These days, ya just don't know what is goin' on........... |

I've found alot of stuff surveying but never an SMG. I'd consider that a good day in the field and am officially jealous.

Dig around, I bet you find his bones. |
