How can a person throw away medals - or at least deliberately give the impression of throwing away medals - as a symbol of rejection of the things they represent, and then run for public office on the strength of the record those medals represent?

Easy. At the time, it was popular to be against the government, the military and the war in Vietnam.

Now, it is popular to support the military and be able to show military strength.

I may be mistaken here, but didn't he use his military service antics in ALL of his previous senate election bids ?

Not really. I'd like to hear a coherent explanation from somebody who backs him on the "war hero" issue.
