I'm working on a story that begins with a bank robbery in Canada that rapidly spins out of control into something much bigger. Still not sure what that much bigger thing is just yet. But I digress.

One of the members of the gang that pulls the robbery is an insane South African. I was thinking that it would be appropriate for a South African to be equipped with a firearm from their homeland. So I wanted this character to use a Vektor SP1 pistol. For those of you who don't know what it is it looks like this.

Essentially it is an improved Beretta 92.

At first I thought to myself that this was a bit of clever writing. I have heard that Canadians get some guns we don't get because of different import laws. Then I realized that there was no guarantee that there were any SP1s in Canada. Or any guns from South Africa at all. So my question is, were SP1s ever available in Canada? If not then what kind of handgun would you suggest an unusually well financed Canadian criminal would be armed with.

Or I could just write it that she smuggled it from SA.

Interesting, but a bit too big. The scene where the pistol is drawn happens a little while after the actual robbery and a concealable weapon is needed.

However it is a major plot point that the robbers are armed with guns that would suggest that they don't need to rob anyone for $$$

I think you should get in touch with Fluffy, I'm sure if they were available here he would know.

Well depending on how well heeled and sophisticated she is, gold plated Beretta is always an option.
I don't think we got many South African guns here.

Okay that's pretty apropo, I think the Beretta P4 is the new standard issue pistol for the South African police. This would be suitably tacky for the psychopath in question.

It looks like Steyr M9-L9 pistols are pretty commonly available in your online shops.

This is a pretty good shop, this will give you an idea of what's widely available in Canada.  Pistols.  On a side note the Alpha project revolvers seem pretty good from a sample of 1 that I have.  Not sure if you guys get them in the states.

I live in Canada.  I was born in Nystroom, Transvaal, South Africa.

I'm also insane.

Anyway, I do know of at least one SP1 that made it to Canada.

But if I were to go rogue, I'd use a Lahti L-35

Right, I forgot you were from that part of the world. The more I look into it the more I'm surprised what options a Canadian citizen has if you are willing to jump through entirely too many hoops. You guys aren't allowed to use handguns legally anywhere except a range, right?

I'm thinking at least one of the gang members is going to be armed with one of these.

The image of someone drawing an L-35 in the middle of a desperate close quarters fight though. The main character is a bit of a gun enthusiast and I can imagine him seeing that and thinking. "What the hell is that? A Luger or something!?"

I have an NZ-85B that I had customized.  I also have a pre-B  CZ-75 and the customized Norinco is better than the original

Para-ordnance are made in Canada and a number of years ago an employee smuggled out a bunch of parts to make guns. I'd give him one of those.
