I ran into a long time buddy of mine that I hadn't seen for about a year. We got to talking and he told me that his younger brother's wife just had another baby boy last week. He told me the brother named the little guy, Judah, after his mother, who had passed away when they were young children.
I was stunned when I heard this. I asked my friend if he knew that they named the baby after Judas Iscariot, and he....and the brother were completely oblivious. They are reformed Jews, pretty much non-religious in general, and had no idea who Judas Iscariot was. The brother just wanted to name the little boy Judah to honor his deceased mother, who was named Judy. The mother is Chinese and also did not know the story of Judas. They gave the baby a Chinese middle name. Something I cannot remember exactly, that starts with a Z. My friend didn't like the name because it sounded too much like Jew-ed, and he felt that would be an awkward name for the kid to carry around. The Chinese mother did convert to Judaism. I told my friend that he should try to convince his brother to change the kid's name, or refer to him only a JZ. Do you think I over reacted? UPDATE: First of all.....thank you for all your candid comments. OK..........I admit it. I am a biblical ignoramus. I now throw myself upon the ARFCOM altar and beg for redemption. I did not fully know the difference between Judah and Judas before I offered unsolicited advice and opinion. I called my friend and gave him my apology. He, thankfully, accepted it fully and even laughed about it because he was actually a bit disappointed. He still does not like the name. Thankfully, he hasn't talked to his brother......so this issues dies here. As far as ARFCOM goes........please disregard any previous biblical comments I may have posted.....as they may also be factually inaccurate. Any political commentary, dental information, or advise on bagging supermodels is, certainly, still 100% accurate ! |

You should probably call him; apologize and let him know that you were mistaken and that Judah was considered the greatest of the tribes of Israel. The royal line, ie David, came from the tribe of Judah.
In other words, Judas was a Judah but Judah is not Judas. |

Judah Ben-Hur isn't something to sneeze at.
Teach him to drive the chariot and to be careful of loose roof shingles.

According to wiki,
Judah (Biblical person), fourth son of the Biblical patriarch Jacob (Israel) All later individuals, groups and places of this name are directly or indirectly derived from this Judah. |

Quoted: In the Bible, Judah and Judas are different people. Well, yes. Judas is the Greek form of Judah, though. Even still, Judah was also the fourth son of Jacob. |
|
You are over the line. Way the fuck over it. Who are you to demand that they change the childs name? Judah is a long standing name in Hebrew tradition.
Judah was the fourth son of Jacob and Leah, and the founder of the Israelite Tribe of Judah. Judah was one of the Tribes of Israel. Judah was the Biblical kingdom ruled by the royal line of David |

Quoted: Do you think I over reacted? Yeah, you did. Judah is not Judas. |

But this is an assimilated dude living in a (more-or-less) Christian country and there is no escaping the fact that Judas is a translation variation of Judah. |

If the parents are reformed Jews then Judah or Yehuda is appropriate––it's a Biblical name. Sadly, other kids will make fun of his name, so what. If they wanted to honor the deceased grandmother Judy then how about Jodi, Jodie, or Jody for the boy?

In the bible it says Jesus is the lion of the tribe of Judah. My sons name by the way is Asher Isaac Nathaniel Zuriel Searcherfortruth.
I named him myself, and he loves his name. Each name has a meaning, and he is living up to his name. |

Be thankful they didnt name it after a character in a video game like Final Fantasy, like a friend of mine did. I refuse to call her kid by that name, and I just call her daughter Ed, just to anoy her

Just tell everyone he was named after the Confederate Secretary of State.

And 95% of people either don't know that or don't care. Yes, you were out of line. Also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jude_the_Apostle Both "Jude" and "Judas" are translations of the name Ιούδας in the Greek original New Testament, which in turn is a Greek variant of Judah, a name which was common among Jews at the time.
OH GOD EVERYBODY NAMED JUDE IS A TRAITOR TOO! NOOOOOOOOESSSSSSSSSSsss. ETA: Saint Thomas' first name was also "Judas". As was St. Thaddeus. |

That's nothing. One time I knew a woman who had the nerve to name her daugher Ah Satan spelled backwards Judah =/= Judas Escariot. |

I like it.
It is a lot better than Logan and all the other popular names that every other kid is named. Just call him Ben-Hur. |

I'm sure you meant only the best, but you're wrong here. Associating all Judahs with Judas Iscariot is like associating all Joshuas with Jesus of Nazareth (except with the opposite implications...)
Yeah, Judah's a bit of a strange name in this day and age, but everybody gets made fun of for something in school, if it's just his name, he's lucky. My first name is Nick and I got called "Nick the Dick," "Nick the Prick," "Thick Nick," "Nicole," and a few others back in grade school and I turned out fine. He'll probably just go by a nickname like Judd, Jay, or Jay-Z. |

Why would u care if the kid was named Satan? I mean it's not your kid, your family & a friend you haven't seen in a year....
I wouldn't have chosen it personally, no matter the meaning, but it's their deal. I will say though, that there are going to be some messed up kids bc of their names |

To the OP, Doc, I think you jumped the gun, just a tad. Judas is not Judah. It's a tribe of Israel just like Asher is. |

There were multiple Judas in the bible. I live in a heavily christian area, nobody would think Judas when they met someone named Judah...
Oh yeah, you overreacted badly. |
