FINALLY....we got a nice cool(er) evening and I took my grandson out to the range.  We took his birthday present - a  new Bearcat Shopkeeper as well as Grand-Bobs Colt Sporter.  I'd been promising him range time with the Black Rifle for months.  He was more than ready to shoot it.  Kylar did great with both guns.  He told me on the way back up the hill that he can't wait until he turns 21 so he can take his gun home with him!  He's hooked.  I'm gonna have to buy more Rimfire ammo and start using that Dillon 550 just to keep up with his need to send .223 sized bullets down-range!  Really, I can't think of a better way to spend my time.

BTW...he's been shooting with me since his fourth birthday.  I have a little Savage Cub that he's been shooing for two years.  The Cub's peep-sight made the move to the AR as easy as pie.  He's also shot a Winchester 75 Sporter, and Marlin Model 25M and an old Model 53 Sporter....but mostly his Cub.  A great training rifle with a sweet Accu-trigger.

Bob

Sincere concentration.....

That extractor can be a pain on this little Bearcat....

Today he got to load a single round for himself...he loaded a few more for me...he likes to let me shoot too!

He watched the entire operation one time and needed no further help....he really pays attention...

Nice shot with him backlit by the sinking sun....

Checking to see that the round(s) are seated to the back of the follower...

He handled the safety and closed the bolt.

Shooting was the best part!

He learned to fill the magazine...at least until the fifth round...

A new "Black Rifle" shooter.....age six plus six days

AND a young man's smile after his first experience with a Single Action Revolver...his own six gun.

This is GOOD stuff.  Great to see him enjoying it so much.  My Grandma was quite the tomboy and gun collector and is the one that taught me to shoot some 30 years ago.  Those will be memories that he will never, ever forget.  Top Notch Grandpa skills VonFatman!!!

I just recently got a Single Six, made in 1953.

My son is only two right now, but I know he's going to love it when he's older.

Is the Bearcat mostly the same thing with a shorter barrel, or are there any significant differences between the models?

Great job, What a smile.
Teach him the manly arts now and you'll never have to worry about him.
Unfortunately when he goes back to school and is asked what he did on his summer vacation he wont be able to mention this.

You have a shooting berm in your yard ?  So jealous !  When the kids (9 & 7) go to the range with me I love every minute of it.  I bought them a 22 Remington a couple of years ago.  We make a day of it, pack a lunch, shoot ~500 rounds.  Mom gets some quiet time if the baby (2) takes a nap.

We are trying to find someone to babysit the 2 year old so the four of us can go to the range.  It's been too long since mom has had some time on the trigger.

Mods...sorry about the forum placement....it was late.

Thanks to everyone for the great replies.  It was super fun.

Yes sir....eyes and ears always.

Norinco982lover,
I hear ya....but he ran out of arm!

Travmack,
That is cool about your grandma....one of my grandmas was a tomboy too!

Trojan man,
It's the Bearcat Shopkeeper....it has a shorter barrel (3 1/2" I think), stainless with a birdshead grip.  A good size for a young shooter.

URmyAlibi,
Actually, he goes to a Christian school and he CAN talk about his adventures with firearms....that is good.

Some asked about where we shot....Here are some photos of the range.  About 300 yards east of the house.  I'm working on shade at 50 and 100 yards....also a bit taller berm.
