1-1/2 ton unit.

Been on its last legs for about 2 years now.

Split unit and had the heat side replaced 3 years ago.

A/C side is over 20 years old.

What am I looking at cost-wise, to replace the A/C side?

What did you end up paying to replace an A/C unit of that capability?

Did you find that the newer Freon worked better as opposed to the older R-22 units?

Thankfully, Fall is in the air and I may be able to save some money to buy a new system before Summertime sets in again.

I have heard of other folks replacing their A/C units and they  told me that their cooling bills went down over the summer.

I am unsure of this and was wanting to find out if others had experienced the same thing.

Order the same size outside unit on eBay. Have local guy install it correctly. The unit will be easier to purchase that it will be to have someone install it correctly.

Keywords

New lineset
Virgin 410a
Micron gauge
braze under 2-3 PSI nitrogen flow
Superheat and subcooling

If your installer is not well experienced with the above terms/practices look for someone who is

A unit that small should be well under $2k

Besides being old, what's wrong with the old one? I've replaced relays, capacitors, blower motor and topped up the r22 over the last few years in my unit. I know it's getting old. But it ain dead till you say its dead.

Although I did spend the weekend replacing my rotten boiler. Mostly because the water was trying to fill the basement.

That is a good price!

How have your results been with it so far?

Are you saving money on your warm month utility bills or is it about the same as your old bills with the R-22 unit?

I just had my whole blower unit replaced Saturday. There went my money for a Zenith Z-5RS
It cost me 2300 bucks and my Sat. morning/afternoon. My old unit uses r22 but my ac guy put in a blower that can convert to the newer stuff when my compressor blows out.
ETA: my blower is a 4 ton.

Not sure if most around here would even be knowledgeable of what you have just described.

Had one guy who came out who said that he could do it for $1900.

Would install the new outdoor unit and use my existing A coil.  Don`t know if that is a good idea or not.

Mine crapped out last night after freezing up for 2 days.

You ought to hear the unit come on now.

People a block away can hear it too.

That thing is howling.

As soon as it kicks on, I run at full speed to turn off the thermostat.

I just had my 3.5 ton unit replaced.  Guardian system made by york here in the usa.  14 seer ac, 95 percent efficient furnace 105k blower ..    $3900 total installed.  I  had to pick up the unit and take my old to the scrap yard were the stipulations.

Freezing up usually means it's low and you have a leak, I would not run it until you can have it filled and sniffed to find the leak. Save your compressor! IIRC it's the refrigerant itself that keeps the compressor motor cool.

I did a 4.5 ton 16 seer ac and furnace for about 6k.  I will say higher seer makes a substantial difference. My bill is a fraction of what my neighbors pay in comparable houses. I have also done great improvements such as insulation, new windows and such. For as hot as it is here, highest my electric bill gets is about 120 a month, last month was 80.

I know that I have a leak.

Part of the leak is in the A-coil. The other, is in the unit outside on the pad. Not sure if the compressor is leaking.

Knowing all of these things,

wondering if replacing the existing unit with a higher efficiency set-up will be a better expenditure......or fix the faulty components.....

And get zero warranty and get hammered on labor if you can find a loser to install it. All HVAC warranties specifically exclude internet sales for warranty coverage. And anyone that actually knows what they are doing will not be interested in this type of work.

I want someone that I can call who will answer the telephone and is reputable if I need a warranty issue resolved.

Have heard of too many buddy deals that left folks hanging in the wind when things didn`t work after installation.

sounds like the bearings went out on the blower motor. low Freon isn't the only reason for freezing, there can be many reasons including air flow over the evaporator coil. what part of the state are you in?

E TN.

It isn`t the blower motor.

That thing sounds like a coffee grinder in full speed and is very loud.

The whole pad seems to shake when the compressor kicks on.

Yeah.   Thats a pretty good price.   Im getting 3k estimates for a 1.5 ton unit installed.   Must have a HVAC mafia in town.

Fortunatley,  Dad is handy with a/c systems and licenced to buy the older refrigerants.   We've been able to keep my 30 year old rudd unit limping along,  but the damn thing is on its last leg.

AC compressors can make a tremendous racket when the bearings are on their last leg. On car systems,   It gets really fun when the compressor finally blows up and pukes those little needle bearings into the refrigerant lines.

Replace it with a matched set (evaporator, condenser, thermostat, and fan).  It will save you in the long run. You are looking at $3 to $5k.  If you can wait a little longer everything will go on sale and they will offer 12 months same as cash. The price will be dependent on how efficient of a unit you purchase and how hungry your a/c guy is.

The on line suppliers are running 10% discounts now and will hook you up with a local installer.

The secret with the 12 months same as cash is to never pay late or it will trigger high interest rates. What I do is, as soon as I sign the contract I divide the cost by 10 and send in a check. That way I pay it off early and I am one month ahead of the payments so nothing gets delayed in posting my payment.
