This is the story from earlier today. On the 5 O'clock news they had the name of the perp and video of the shoot out. They say he had an "assault weapon", but in the video it's hard to tell. May have been an M16.  The officer killed was shot in the head. In the video it almost looked like it was a setup ambush.

One Ceres Police Officer Killed, One Wounded in Shooting Incident
One Ceres police officer was killed and one wounded Sunday night in a shooting incident outside a liquor store. Three hours after the officers were shot, the armed suspect was killed in a shootout with police.

Sgt. Howard Stevenson died of his injuries after being shot multiple times at about 8:30 p.m. near George's Liquors on Caswell Avenue in Ceres. Fellow officer Sam Ryno was also wounded.

Police responded to the scene after several 911 calls reported a man who appeared to be carrying a gun was acting strangely outside the store. Officers approached the man, who opened fire with what's being described as an assault rifle. After the shooting, the gunman fled into a nearby neighborhood.

Officers with the Ceres, Newman, Turlock and Modesto police departments, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department, and the California Highway Patrol cordoned off the area and began a search, concentrating on the a neighborhood near Caswell and Central avenues. At about 11:30 p.m., the suspect was located behind a home. According to police, the gunman opened fire on officers. There was an exchange of gunfire and the suspect was killed.

The identity of the suspect has not been released.
