ARMA2 is $7.99 for the midweek madness Steam sale. Downloading the demo now, but I've heard a lot of good things about this game. Anybody played it? Anybody getting it?

The demo is dated and not a good representation of the current ARMA2/OA

ARMA is not a twitch game like COD.  Infact game is a poor term for it.  I lack the words to describe it well, but its sort of like piloting a retarded person in a combat zone.  Your use the poor controls to travel 15 minutes from your spawn point into combat.  You see an enemy, so you hit the prone key, and instead your character takes several steps.  Then you get shot once, fall down and bleed out for 5 minutes.  Repeat the process until the match ends.  Sort of like Red Orchestra.

BI has provided excellent support for the game, and Operation Arrowhead is a must have for Arma 2, BAF is good.  Skip PMC.  ARMA2 isn't so much fun, as it is a provider of an experience you don't find in other games.

Why does everything look washed out and hazy? I could only go about 5 minutes on the demo before it made my head hurt.

Get Operation Arrow Head as well.

Then download the ACE mod for it.

This is not a twitch game like CoD, and it is not like BF. The fun lies in the editor and large scale combat. Escorting some APCs as they enter a city, deploy infantry which storms a mosque (well, actually, they got butchered ) with Harriers flying above for CAS is very fun.

The overall gameplay is much more realistic than just about any shooter. There is so much to do in the game, so many scenario types. I made a mission where you have to sneak into an airbase undetected and plant C4 below parked planes.or you can place a bunch of sand bags, M2s, MK19s, and a bunch of soldiers, and have the enemy charge in. Hell, I even made my own custom "CQC Shooting Range".

There are some issues with the game, but it gets better with each release. More sales = a higher chance for a nice sequel coming out. So buy it!

Its really worth the price. It requires a hefty system though. My AMD 965, GTX 260, and 4GB of RAM struggle in certian areas.

I have been playing operationsflashpoint/arma/arma2OA/CO for over 10 years ..one of the best sims every made . it is based on VBS2 which is used by several countries to train their mil on in a VR world. I do enjoy the mods , and you need a damn good pc to run it . I do love playing online with 60 people TVT for hours, its really as good as it gets for a combat sim. plus the editor is fairly easy to make basic missions and the AI is not bad. It is not a perfect game , has some flaws but really there is nothing out there that comes close for all it can do. Plus there are countless addons for weapons and vehicles and other stuff. ACE is great too .

Check out http://www.armaholic.com/ for addons and missions , and http://www.tacticalgamer.com/armed-assault/ is the forums equivalent of AR15 for Arma stuff. if you want the closest thing to combat operations with radio and squad level ops then check out the tactical gamer guys and get on their teamspeak . I have played missions that last 8 hours , night ops lasing targets for the a10's and taking over towns . I do love me some warfare mode . I Do have a beefy enough machine and good enough Internet to host about 8 person co-ops if anyone is interested. Voice comms will be needed if anyone is up for it. this game is not for the impatient FPS player and the requires a bit of computer techy savvy to really enjoy. buy it and all the expansions and DLC , it can be fun even virtual shooting at the range and hunting too.

Here is a vid of some good co op with radio , its damn fun http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lh0VOXYZvXU&feature=related

I just picked this up as well though I bought the combo pack in stores. Haven't tried it yet but I was a fan of Operation Flashpoint back in the day. Hopefully my rig can run this alright...

Operation Flashpoint: 1985 Cold War Crisis was made in the 90's , not this new one that came out a year or 2 ago which is crap made by codemasters. OFP was ahead of its time back then , i could see it being frustrating as there are alot of controls. ARMA CO is even more complicated now though with medic actions and more controls , with ACE and other mods my install is at 70 GIGs . It is very sophisticated and made for the hard core sim player and takes an hour or more to set up properly with all the mods and trackIR .

have a look at VBS2 with Arma is based on , thisis the software that many militaries use for training in several companies. Arma2 is just a civilian porting of VBS2

Have they fixed the jet throttle yet?  I hated trying to use my HOTAS setup and having to keep the A10 nose level if I wanted to stay in the air, so I was zooming around the countryside at 5kt above stall speed, at 50' above the ground...

Do you mean Dragon Rising or the PC original?  Dragon Rising is very easy and short.  The original was harder, but only Red Hammer campaign was frustrating.  Resistance is still the best campaign i ever played in FPS.

Crawl/Prone alot
Try to engage enemy AI at 250 meters plus.  Any less and they become more active in hitting you.
Give many team members RPG's/LAW's.
Practice with AT weapons ALOT!  At most engagment distances in the game, slightly high works like a charm. side/rear/turret shots.
Place Mines in front of spaced-out satchel charges for conveys.  Like a big T
Split large squads into two teams.
Put teammates in STEALTH mode and keep low/go prone when in combat.
Have your medic and snipers SCAN HORIZON.  It seems to cause them to shoot less and live longer.  Otherwise your Medic seems to ALWAYS fucking be the first casualty.  Its also good to give your Medic a suppressed weapon or Sniper rifle.
Callout enemy positions first before attacking any enemy posistion.  It helps the AI teammates quite a bit.  Sometimes its even better to assign them specific targets, especially for the Sniper and AT gunner.
Hand Grenades suck in OFP/ARMA.  I use them mostly to flush-up prone enemies that are behind a fense or around a building.  Grenade Launchers suck too.
If enemy AI is "turned out" in armor vehicles, shoot the commander or gunner.  They only do this when they are in SAFE mode.

I was talking about the original.  Seems like I would routinely get shot from 500 yards through the tree's.

not quite that bad , but there are alot of AI mods out now that make them much smarter. with ACE here are more advanced medic funtions like stretchers and Morphine and other stuff. You still never see is coming though ...

I wish the weapons had their own reload animations and times. One of the annoying this with the series. An M4 should be quicker to reload than an M240 or RPG.
