Does anyone know where I can buy cheap 1/2'' thick 12''x12'' plates of AR500 steel? Pre-made targets will work as well in the same size or larger if they are decently priced. I am assuming AR500 steel that is not coming from a target company will be cheaper since the target company would not be getting their cut. I want to buy the steel from the steel company if it is cheaper to do it that way. Info would be of great assistance, thanks!!!!

Here  But I don't think they sell 12x12 square.  I bought a 12in gong from them and several other sizes.  They are GTG.

Bill types faster than I do.

EE Ad I saw today

Seems like the smaller stuff is more expensive than Wideners with shipping, but you'd save a bunch for 12x12.

Doh, the 12x12 he's selling is 3/8". I've never shot steel, is that a big deal if you're shooting 100+ yards?

If I had kept going and added that Widener's is a great company and that I have bought from them many times, you would have been first

I have several plates from wideners and I got several from a member here who, to the best of my knowledge, no longer has any to sell.

You really don't need 1/2" steel, but it's nice to have.

I have read about it a little and most say as long as you are 100+ yards away it should not be affected, that goes for 3/8 and 1/2 inch. I just want 1/2'' to be safe, I might be a little closer than 100 yards and am going to be shooting a variety of rifle calibers at the target. The thicker the target is the longer it will last I am assuming.

The steel company sells it in large sheets, in order to cut it you need some fairly expensive equipment to do it right, or you can cut it with a torch and the heat will change the hardness of the edges of the steel.

The pricing in the EE add does suck for the small targets, they are more meant for people to throw in a couple of them with larger targets due to the flat rate shipping.

Not a big deal at 200+ yards. Also matters how you hang it.

Look up steel suppliers in your area, they can get it and cut it to the size you want and save you on shipping.

If you get some, dont expect to cut it with a hacksaw.

This. I had some fullsize IDPA targets made out of hardox 500 3/8" thick with laser etched scoring zones for $135ea from a local steel shop.

I've shot 3/8" steel at 15 yards with 5.56 62grain penetrator SS109 at a slight angle all it did was put gray splatter marks on the surface, (just color).

pistol does the same thing, so whatever.

No indentation at all? I could get some 3/8'' then, I like spending less money.

3/8" is a good size.  If you get heavier it will do more damage because of the inertia.  This is assuming that you are using it as a swinging style target.  So a 24" x 24" piece would be damaged more than a 12" x 12".  So keep it small.  Our local laser shop keeps AR plate in stock and will cut it to whatever shape you want for barely over material cost if your buying more than a couple.
