I was looking on Reuters news website a few days ago and they had an Iraq photo of a U.S. G.I. comms guy with a handset hooked on each shoulder and an AK slung by his side, with several AK mags sticking out of his vest. Then tonight on the news there was a video of G.I.'s in Irag doing house searches and one of those guys had an AK. Are they really allowed to carry AK's? I know there are plenty around there and lots of ammo available, but it just looks stranger than sh*t. Any comments from G.I.'s now in or returned from that God forsaken sandbox?

Many SNCO's, Corpsmen, and other soldier's who only rated an M9 as their T.O weapon  chose to carry AK's in Iraq. It probably is not allowed but many things are overlooked in a Combat Zone. I know our CO never told those who carried them not to. It depends on how anal your command is...I'll tell you one thing; it's a heck of a lot easier to maneuver in a house with an AK as opposed to an M16A2....

Shoot, I'd grab an AK if I had the chance also. That way when you run into Habib and his buddies you can take their ammo from em in a firefight after you wax em for felony stupidity for shooting at you and your buddies.

I carried one around camp for several weeks before a visiting Colonel caught wind (I was ratted out)and confiscated it.
