As I say in the video, this is equal parts redneck and science. Watch a Humvee windshield stop several 7.62x39 bullets to learn how glass works as armor.

Yup

Very interesting video for sure. I would be interested to see how this armored glass would stand up to a 50 caliber round.
Link Posted: 7/24/2013 12:47:06 AM EST
Nice video.

I'm thinking you shot the steel frame because you forgot about height over bore, though... Both shots were rather low.

Still, nice video... Look forward to more.

My channel, my video. I get to explain it the way I want to.

ETA: It still made a good comparison.

Sounds good... There's like five people who even know what height over bore is, and none of them care.

Again, nice video.

There's a new glass type for that. The stuff that's in them now won't stop it.

I've been reading about this for a while, but I guess they still can't get the cost down enough to use it. Pretty cool, though.

To be honest, if you're in a vehicle like the HMMWV, and you're getting shot by 12.7/14.5, I suspect a lack of sufficiently armored glass is only part of your problem...

Those 12.7 rated transparencies are better applied on things like IFVs, APCs, MRAPs and various other vehicles that at least were intended to have any level of small arms survivability to start with. VIP protection as well (Pope Mobile and Spinner Rims One).

Naw...run across DsHKas on the back of pickups...taking a few rounds from it before your gunner gets turned around and laying hate on the asshole is a good thing as he sits behind that glass.

Now if that fire was coming from say a BTR...well....your day just sucks.

That is actually the nominal rating of this windshield. It's 2.5" thick, rated for multiple 7.62x54R LPS hits and 90% of 152mm fragments. These windshields go up to 3.5" thick, but I think this size is more common.

But RustedAces told be DsHKs never work.

Let's face it: Congress isn't going to slap that stuff in every HMMWV. It's probably like a thousand bucks an ounce. And it still only protects the transparencies themselves.

Iraq a couple times....lot of snipers in Dora

No...I believe I would have shit my pants on the RPG in the cage. Was impressed how well the glass held up against a direct RPG hit, though. (Not mine, thank God...that TC had to have shit his pants for real..."glass" held perfectly around the plasma jet about a foot into the vehicle)

This glass also works well with EFPs, but I wasn't in a position to demonstrate that.

Thankfully I never got tagged with an EFP, just 105s and 155s...

Steel Jacketed is correct terminology.

Though it doesn't really enhance penetration much.

Yup...and it's really really loud when your leaning against the door and a round smacks into the other side.

And kids chucking rocks will chip and damage the windows...our mechanics it hated when we went to certain neighborhoods because they had to change out the windows....those bad boys are pricey.

shooting the windshield from the inside out.. makes it a little misleading. the INSIDE of a armored hummer window, has a layer of goo covering it, just to catch the glass fragments, and it will not spall on the inside. shooting it inside out, it will spall.

Not sure if you watched the whole video, but this is pretty much exactly what I demonstrate by shooting from both sides and discuss at the end of the video.

It's not goo, though, that is used for a spall guard. It is simple polycarbonate, which is cheap and effective as I show. Any "goo" might be referencing the optical urethane used to bond the glass panels together, but it has no significant anti-spalling properties. In fact, armored glass is designed to spall as a way of redirecting energy, but the spall should be ejected away from the occupants and not towards them.

That's far from new.

New as in, I've never seen a HMMWV with it in it and that is what they were talking about using in the future.

With that said, I don't think I ever seen one that had been targeted by a .50cal. IED attacks were the major threat and the windows shattering wasn't the cause of the injuries, it was burns and concussion.
