A begging letter just sent out by the American Civil Liberties Union reveals that the organization, which has taken on such an important role in recent years with its battles against the Bush administration's assaults on due process and revival of the use of torture, is a victim of the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme. While the ACLU had no money of its own invested in Madoff's scams, foundations on which it relies for substantial funding were devastated by the scandal. The letter, signed by Director of Administration and Finance Alma Montclair, says: You have, no doubt, heard about the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme in which investors have been horribly defrauded of up to $50 billion. What you may not know is that two foundations that have been incredibly generous and longstanding supporters of our national security and reproductive freedom work have been victimized by the Madoff scandal –– forced to close their doors and terminate their grants. That means that $850,000 in support we were counting on from these foundations in 2009 simply won't exist. We're dealing with that reality and remain committed to continuing our critical work in these areas. Civil liberties advocates who want to help offset the ACLU's financial difficulties can make donations here. |

Another in before the Simpson Ha-Ha picture and by the way, Ha Ha! Merry Xmas ACLU.

Love how they had to throw a jab in there at President Bush.

As my late mother-in-law would say, "Life is tough when you have to chew milk."

So, in other words, before the Ponzi scheme went bust, the ACLU benefited from it.

Madoff is lucky this guy was French http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/us_world/Madoff-Fund-Operator-Found-Dead-in-Office.html
I heard some retired guy yesterday who lost basically everything he had invested with Madoff. One of Madoff's flunkies in Boston married into some wealthy Boston/New York family and lost a ton of that families money also. |

That means that $850,000 in support we were counting on from these foundations in 2009 simply won't exist. Apparently, the ACLU's annual budget is around $50 million. So, this shortfall amounts to around 1.7 percent of their total budget. |

I'm sure there's more than meets the eye with this Madoff case, like his sons have a huge pile of cash waiting for them somewhere, while Madoff senior takes off to go live in Israel.

So far, that doesn't appear to be the case. It looks like he may have ruined his kids as well because they had a lot of their money with him. |

Correct. They went to their attorneys and their attorneys advised them to go to the FBI. They haven't spoken to their father since and refused to sign for his bond. |

two foundations that have been incredibly generous and longstanding supporters of our national security and reproductive freedom work have been victimized by the Madoff scandal –– forced to close their doors and terminate their grants.
Wonder which two foundations? Since ACLU is all about openness, shouldn't they name names? |
