I've been out of work for 2 years. relocated, and tried everything to get into ANYTHING.

Yet according to ARFCOM I'm a slag and generally unemployable!

Guess I should just go sign up for welfare.

Hang tough. I know that's easy to say from the internet, but God will never shut one door without opening another.

It's obvious that many jobs will never come back for reasons we all understand too well.

Thought & prayers going out for you.

I'm at 6 weeks and about 100 resumes. It's taken this long to get my first interview. It's in 2 and a half hours. It's a 4 dollar an hour raise over my last job with better hours, so hell, getting let go may have been a good thing.

I have rode 20,000 + miles, 20+ states. Hand delivering a few dozen resumes, and the rest via craigslist, Monster, careerbuilder, and other means.

So relocation is kind of the agenda.

Only thing is, I kinda have to stay in my industry.

Yeah, I am helping out a buddy do some estate clearing in Gadsden....and looking hard in the area. I have applied for about 2 dozen jobs from B'ham to Cullman. Not even one call back or email to tell me I SUCK!

I'm in the same boat you are, over two years unemployed. Luckily, the wife has a very well paying job so it doesn't make sense for her to give that up right now by relocating. And through careful budgeting, being debt free, and general frugality, I've yet to take a dime of unemployment compensation.

My brother has been out of work for two 1/2 years (new homes business - the company he worked for went under)

He is going from making 6 figures to working at Home Depot $10 / hr, but hanging in there knowing that is better than $0.

He is debating going to be a O.T.R. truck driver for Stevenson

Keep it up; it will pay off eventually.

I have had 7 interviews in the last 3 months.  All from jobs that I applied to over a year and a half ago when I was unemployed for 6 months in 2009.

Being unemployed was one of the best things that happened to me, because it forced me to get off my ass and really start applying to professional jobs.  I was in a career rut.

I was in manufacturing and went back, but am now on the verge (hopefully - waiting on final approval from the capital) of having my first professional career since graduating college many years ago.

Ill ask around here , Just hooked a friend up in recruiting here about a month ago ....

I still know a few guys over at the big orange turd too ..... Not really a fun place to work anymore , but its better then starving, I'll see what they have (cause when you have 3000 ofiice employees there are ALWAYS openings) ,

cost of living here is relatively low, assuming you dont freeze to death your first winter

(of course arfcom is blocked from work so you have to post through the back door ... that may be a deal killer  )

I did some hiring at the last place I was at, and went through gajillions of resumes.

Couple things always scored points with me:

Simple, honest summary of work.

Willingness to do anything (I recall one who had McDonald's on his resume in between professional positions - that told me he wanted to work, not wait around for the plum job)

Cover letter giving me a clue that they at least researched the company a little. Lots of bulk mail resumes touting nothing in the way of experience or talent that the company could use.

If you email resumes, follow up with something else. Handwritten notes always got attention because they are so rare anymore. Don't pester people, but a follow up a week after sending something is appropriate. Understand that you may need to wait a month or more before hearing back. HR departments are swamped, and management rarely gives reviewing candidates the time it deserves. Ironic, because personnel arguably have a bigger impact on the bottom line than darn near anything else.

Know your strengths and what the company does, and how you can make them money. That's really the bottom line (of course, knowing someone can help, but not always)

Good luck with your search.
