I saw a guy shooting an AR at my range yesterday that was chambered in 7.62 x 39; I've always known these were out there, but I never paid close attention or saw one fired until yesterday, and I really liked it.
Who makes the uppers for these, do they take the 7.63 x39 to a level of accuracy the AK/SKS does not? Will any lower work with the upper?
Is the upper a scaled up AR/M16? Last but not least, are decent hi-cap mags available?
Thanks in advance for any replys

a couple of manufacturers such as bushmaster (used to) and olympic arms listed these uppers. i have one friend who has a custom upper in 7.62x39 - flat top, 16 inch barrel - it shoots MOA (basically into 1" at 100 yds) from the bench. this was with PMC ammo. haven't seen it shoot with wolf or barnaul. only problem he has is finding magazines that function well.

Everything is the same except for the barrel, bolt and flash hider.

30 rnd mags are hard to find. (maybe not for long, eh?)

Quite a bit more accurate than an AK or SKS. Shoots Wolf too.

see that mag in that gun? those are the only ones that work in mine and they all had to be tweaked. i have only one mag that runs close to %100 the rest feed about %80 of the time. be prepared to work on it.

Knights and (ugh) Hesse also make AR variants that take AK mags...

The Knights version costs alot, and presumably the Hesse version doesn't work...

The rifle is fine, the mags suck.

I have the USA "Frankenmags" that have been tweaked to work well, but none will drop free. I wrote a long dissertation here a couple of years ago describing how to tweak the mags to make them work. The spring has to be bent in a certain location so that the follower will cope with the curve-to-straight transition of the mag's box.
