I have never run more than a mile, and never raced.

What am I in for ?

Wife has me signed up for 10 K race

I have never owned real running shoes.

Danner Fort Lewis boots are probably not a good choice.... what do you recommend for footwear?

.

Colt .45 officers, or Glock 26 ?

What should I do about holster?

Galco shoulder rig, or ComTac minotaur, or go full fag and use the bianchi belly bag ?

Wife said it is too late to do any "Training" but stretching is a good idea.

I recommend you do a lot of walking tomorrow and enjoy the scenery. If you try to "race" with brand new shoes having never run over a mile before, you're gonna be in for a world of hurt.

Good luck. What are your footwear choices? I recommend you go buy a pair of running shoes or cross trainers if you don't own any.

You're going to get hot spots like a motherfucker.

Drink a few beers or a good blosdy Mary.
Wear knee high socks...dual stripes on top....fuck those gay black ones.
Wear a really cool vintage 1985 hobie or OP tank top.
At mile 3.5 sit down chug a beer or light a cigarette and push on.
They give you time bonus points if you do.t stop to shit or piss.

Stretch like a mofo.....

Then after you recover plan on something to break your wife like a 100 mile hike...

As an act of revenge, sign your wife up for the Bataan Memorial Death March. Tell her about it 5 days before hand. Or better yet, don't tell her until you're putting her on the plane.

Running is largely a mental game.  I run three miles pretty consistently, but at that point it is pretty easy for me to come up with a reason I should stop.  Sometimes I mentally can only go a couple.

I hate running.  Some enjoy it.  I try to like it and won't give up totally though.

You're in for some heavy breathing and a good 30 minute workout if your good.

Your in for a two hour walk if you aren't.

Yikes. I used to run 2-3 miles every other day and it took several weeks to train for a 10K.

Good luck. Keep a steady pace, and take walking breaks every mile or so if you need to.

... never run a mile before,... does not own running shoes,... running a 10k tomorrow,...  in fact, it's a race,...  LOLOLOL!

Why are you doing this?  You should really train for these - working your way up in mileage to a 10k.

You won't be competitive.

You could die.   Pheidippides did.

The second day is the worst.  You will be the most sore that day.  The muscles will ache and be very tight.  Even your leg bones will hurt.

stretching before exercising is detrimental.

stretching should be done after you exercise.

before exercising a light warmup is good ie walking at a brisk pace for about 5 minutes. Usually tuff to do before a race so you try to cut it close to the start time park far away and then walk up then you can just kinda keep moving in place while you are waiting to start.

the biggest thing will be making sure you are very well hydrated before hand. drink lots of water before you go to bed and when you wake up.

I would probably go pick up some running shoes today, go to a running store or at least a sporting goods store that will look at how you walk and help you select the right shoes.

I've not done a 10k, only 5ks and those require me to train a bit from my sedentary lifestyle to be able to jog the whole thing.

start off with a jogging pace just slightly faster than walking or you'll be burnt out and hating life a mile in.

it doesn't matter what you do, because you're walking tomorrow, not running.

If you're in good shape, a 10K won't be that bad, even if you're not a runner. If not, it's gonna kick your ass.

Like mentioned, dont even try to run, why end the day sore and tired and miserable. Just fast walk it. 3-4 mph will give you a nice leasure 2hour walk around. I would start hydrating NOW regardless.

Hmmm. Bandaids, Vaseline..

This is 'foot-racing" is starting to sound  like a kinkier  brand of 'fun'. .

The 10K 'foot-race'  is kind of a surprise  for  saturday morning, just  signed up last night.

Have planned  a 900 mile motorcycle ride,  beginning later  tomorrow afternoon,

, if the smoke isn't too bad, we  are going to transit the Denali Highway.

If the fires are blowing wrong way, we will divert south over Thompson Pass,  to Valdez.

This.

Since you don't have broken in shoes, use liner socks or hose inside your regular socks. It'll help keep blisters down.

I like compression shorts. Keeps the boys high and tight and reduces chaffing.

But, unless you're a real couch potato, almost anyone can shuffle along for a 10k. 1 hour would be a decent time to shoot for, for a non runner.

6.4 miles isn't a big deal.  Shit, I ran a half marathon and didn't train at all, just an occasional 5k.

Best thing you can do is go to a true running shoe store like Running Wild and have them fit you to a good running shoe. (You will thank me later)

I went with Brooks Ghosts.  Hardly even know they are there but they are designed for how I walk/jog/run as I'm an inner heel first striker when walking and running.

You'll be fine, just don't try to break any land speed records.
Link Posted: 6/26/2015 4:48:15 PM EDT
[#32]
How fit are you?

You're a cardio stud but just not a runner? You'll probably be okay.

This is your first physical activity since 1986? You're probably gonna die.

To put this in perspective, 10K is not a lot. Most hobbyist runners cover anywhere from 5 to 6 miles on any given day, in the morning. But you do kinda have to work up to it.

You're welcome.

I run and cycle and play basketball a lot. I will not run a road race longer than 5K. Fuck that. I could easily run 6 miles. I have no desire to absorb the punishment. @225 pounds anything more than 3 miles is counterproductive. I ran a 5K Wednesday in about 23 minutes. Not race pace but enough to work up a good sweat. I've been on the bike the rest of the week.

Good luck, it's going to hurt.

This!

Your wife is stupid. Don't follow her lead.  Even walking 6 miles, if you aren't used to it, will hurt.

This is why so many people don't/can't run--they start wrong and get injured or discouraged and never try again.

Tell your bride that people here who do run--A LOT told you this was a mistake. Go to the fitness forum for the Couch-to-5k program and start that...on Monday.

Do it right or don't do it at all. You'll thank us tomorrow (and, hopefully, for the rest of your life).

<-------   Non-runner who hates running but somehow always gets roped into running 12 man 200 mile mountain relays here. (my portion this year was 18 miles divided into 3 separate legs)  I didn't train more than 20 miles total this year and I somehow did okay.

1) run slow, then run 10% slower than that.  If you're inexperienced you will run too fast.

2) run your own race, don't compete with anyone.

3) breathe out... breathing in will take care of itself.  Try to do a 4 count exhale and 2 count inhale.  Get rid of the CO2 poison.

4)concentrate on economy of movement.  arms loose, head high to open lungs, steps shorter and shallower than you would normally run.

5)hydrate tonight and tomorrow like crazy, but get calories too, don't wash out all of your nutrients.

total mental game, put in some music with a medium speed beat and enjoy the ride.
