I'm not overly familiar with these but was wondering if there's somewhere where you can compare the 2 and see what the pro's and con's would be on them.  They both seem to be great rounds.  A friend is looking for a long range rifle for deer and other type hunting and was looking into these 2 cartridges.

thanks.

Define long range?

6 Dasher seems popular amongst a few F-class shooters, that said, pretty much anything between 223 and .50 will take down a deer, and there are a lot of "long range" calibers already out there that will get the job done without having to resort to hand loaded wild cat cartridges.

Neither,  too pedestrian.  Needs to be more obscure...

You might want to head on over to longrangehunting.com there are quite a few guys with 6.5-284 rifles over there.

I'm actauallly thinking of doing a 6.5-284 for the same purpose

Shooters on the USMC Rifle Team used to call the 6.5-.284 the Fag Mag as it would do everything
a .300 Win Mag could but without the recoil........

The 6.5 Creedmoor is about 75-100 fps slower with the same bullets as the 6.5x.284.

Hornady does manufacture loaded ammunition for this cartridge that is very accurate, however. Some of it is loaded with Hornady's new "high energy" powder that gives it performance just about equal to the 6.5x.284.

For the option of buying loaded accurate ammunition, the 6.5 Creedmoor should be very appealing for the long range hunter.

I believe it was our team that invented that term

he mentions accurate barrel life on the 6.5-284 averages 2000 rounds, the short action 6.5's go more like 4000 rounds. also the short action 6.5's will feed in any of the detachable box mags meant for .308 like the AICS mag system you can get for Remingtion 700's.

There's nothing wrong with long actions, I have a 6.5x55 that I reload for and it is a tack driver.

I would think that the 6.5 Creedmore would be a little easier on the barrel, than the bigger cartridge.

Thanks for all the feedback.  He is a reloader as am I so that will not be a factor.  Are there any websites where you can punch in info and it will show you the drop of the bullet, energy, etc.?

Thanks.

keep in mind that with the 6.5x284, barrel replacement starts costing almost as much as projectiles in a per shot cost analysis.

If he only wants to do paper, the 6mm dascher or very similar 6mm XBR are better choices.  They'll both work on deer at closer ranges, too.
