From the CBS website:

THE BIG GUN: Its manufacturer claims the .50-caliber rifle poses no more danger than any other rifle, but critics say its armor-piercing power and long range make it too attractive to terrorists. Ed Bradley reports

Whether or not you are a fan of 60 minutes, or have even watched it, you should watch this report, so you can learn about--and be ready for--the gun control crowd's arguments, etc. . .
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 9:23:03 AM EDT
I will be watching it very closely.

Keep your friends close, and your enemies even closer (makes for an easier shot).

Be ready for some very biased and skewed propoganda.

What time and network are they on?

I watch maybe 15 minutes of TV per year, usually when there is a hurricane coming for weather reports. The rest is watching DVDs.
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 9:53:02 AM EDT
I'm still waiting for the investagtion/report to be released into Rather/Memogate; was supposed to be released yesterday....
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 9:57:10 AM EDT
I've been hearing for four years now how the fifty is too enticing for terrorists not to use. Funny, but somebody must've forgotten to tell them about it, because I haven't heard of one single terror-related crime being committed with the rifle. Come to think of it, I haven't EVER heard of a SINGLE crime, terrorism-related or not, with the thing.

Maybe 60 Minutes can fabricate one or two for tonight's broadcast....
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 10:16:21 AM EDT
Maybe they are airing the show because they WANT some terrorists to use a .50?

Too bad I am so cynical about t hem, but then, they earned it.

Ronnie Barrett will be on to support us.  He's done more to support the .50 bmg shooters than you will know.  Watch it.

The operative word here being See BS right? I CBS too.
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 10:42:58 AM EDT
It will be another liberal media hatchet job.  No point in watching.
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 10:47:08 AM EDT
So that's why all the Tangos that I see on the news are running around with 28-35lb .50cal rifles in Iraq-NOT.  That comment is so full of crap that it reminds me of a babies daiper.  .50's are very sellective use weapons and here in the U.S. 99.999999% of em' are used in 1000 yard target matches and noting else.  Take it from someone that worked at McMillian Arms and helped build/test fire the M-88's that our SEAL's use, the last thing I'd want if I were a Tango would be to lug one of these big boys around all day long.

I am not going to watch because all it will do is piss me off. Even though Ronnie Barrett will be on do you think CBS will do anything other than twist his words, edit his commentary, and portray him as a supplier of arms to terrorists?

Not that I watch CBS, NBC, ABC or any of the commie tv networks anyway... though I send them a lot of email, which I'm sure they delete.

Can someone grab some video tonight for us "longitudinally challenged"???

Bullshit!
You mean to tell me these guys even bother researching before they write their bullshit?
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 11:47:35 AM EDT
I'll be watching, but we all know how the story will be slanted against owners of these rifles.
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 12:05:37 PM EDT
I'll tune in and just bathe in the whiny scary BS.  Didn't the Waco nuts have a .50 cal?  Expect to hear all about *that* one on this show.  I also expect demos of a .50 cal shooting through vests, cars and other stuff and commentary that it "could go clear through an airliner" or other stupid shit.
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 2:33:23 PM EDT
BTT; just in case you missed it. . . .
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 2:52:55 PM EDT
After recently handeling a .50 cal, I can’t imagine anyone thinking that these rifles would be good for terrorists to run around with.  Hell, I don’t consider myself to be a frail person, but I would need months in the weight room just to own one to take from the safe to the range.

'You don't need a five-bedroom home,'' he said. ''You don't need Corvettes, breast implants or fishing clubs. Not all guns are hunting guns. This is a toy.''

For some reason owning a 50 is apealing to me because I like to shoot up junk and stuff.
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 2:53:39 PM EDT
JPPJ: Thanks for the BTT.

Remember 60 Minutes burned down a Vietnamese village and blaming it on the USA, when they got caught, and they changed their tune, and say it "could've" happen. Now the same crew is going to bring us the real story behind the 50BMG? I would trust them as far as I can throw them.

For you folks back east please give us an AAR and let know what is happening with the show. It's only 1615 right now of us on the west coast.

It would be true to their form what starts out as a pro-gun piece, ie dessiminating information, and concludes with some BS like these guns are so heavy, you can't hunt with them, and they can take out an airplane at 1 mile away etc, etc.

The intelligentsia will claim you have no right to own and drive an SUV so how does a .50 caliber rifle stand a chance with these guys....plus the fact they probably don't subscribe to the 2nd being an individual right.  It's tailor-made for a good demagoguery complete with smirks and head bobbing assents and maybe a crude aside about penis size....
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 3:23:06 PM EDT
Nice little comment at the end about how Ashcroft had the FBI change the time brady checks were kept to come into compliance with the law.  Except he didnt' say 24 hours was the law, he said it used to be 90 days so we could check it against the terrorist list, now its 24 hours.  Obvioulsy implying they aren't doing that.
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 3:23:13 PM EDT
The thrust is "What if the terrorists get it and shoot down planes?"

Also why does anyone "need" these terrible things?

Link Posted: 1/9/2005 3:23:21 PM EDT
The report just ended.  Obviously slanted to make our rights look wrong.  Barret made some very good points though, of course no media reinforcement of those points.  Thank goodness we just won the election.  I guess I'll be sending more money to the NRA and Gun Owners of America shortly.
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 3:23:26 PM EDT
It just ended. Made me want to get one.
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 3:24:02 PM EDT
Not once did they mention how much these weapons cost a civilian to buy.  Diaz compared the availability to a .22 caliber rifle.

It was everything that I had expected.

Just finished. Very slanted to the left of course.  However, they did allow one comment from Ronnie Barrett that surprised me.  He stated that a terrorist does not care about any firearms laws that are currently on the books or any potential new laws.  I am surprised that they aired this quote.  Good job Ronnie!!!

Just watched it. Not as bad as I feared it would be, but there was an obvious lean toward the gun banners side. Ronnie Barret only made one faux paux, when he called the gun a "toy" "a high end toy", at least, IMHO.
