I hate 5/8's, currently on 4/10s, may try a 3/12 plan at shiftchange.

We work an 80 hour time period with 12 hour shifts.

One week, you work M,Tu, the Fr,Sa,Su.

The next you work W, Th. One day per pay period, you only work 8 hours and either go home early or come in late.

Everyone likes it. You never work more than three days in a row, and you have everyother weekend off (and its a three day weekend). You also only have to take two days of vactaion to have an entire week off work.

I know Jail is different but we work a crazy schedule!  All 12.25 hour shifts: 4 days on, 7 days off, 3 days on, 3 days off, 7 graves on, 4 days off.  It sucks cause you don't ever get a normal sleeping schedule, but we only work 14 out of 28 days!  50% of the time!  Plus we get a week off every month!

One agency in California (I think it might have been San Diego), did a big, long-term study on this. They found that using 12 hour shifts led to fewer sick days taken, fewer work-related injuries, and lower levels of stress for the officers who worked them, as compared to other schemes. They also found that shift rotations are bad for officers, especially ones that occur in the short term. Shift rotations should definitely not occur every 28 days or months. At least 3-4 months should happen for each rotation.

12s also require fewer officers to man the same number or on the street positions. If memory serves, 10s require about 1.8 officers for each slot you need to fill on the street (your minimum manning level). 8s require 1.6, and 12s require 1.2, because 12s never require you to switch around days off to maintain consistent manning. The only two downsides of 12s are:
-Unless management agrees beforehand, they legally don't have to start paying OT (1.5 hourly) under FSLA until you hit 86 hours in a two-week pay period;
-Because your shifts are such tightly manned, cohesive units, there isn't much flex ability in them; if there is a major incident (OIS, in-service training, a bad flu, or just plain bad luck) and several officers on a shift are unavailable, officers from other shifts will have to be moved in at OT to cover short-term gaps.

All in all, these minor problems. 12s are great, and I have worked 8s and 10s.

Our road guys work ten hour shifts, eight on and six off.  Everyone works on Wednesdays, thats when we do training, special ops, requalification if we can work it out.  Our shifts run 0600hr to 1600hr, 1600hr to 0200hr, and 2000hr to 0600hr.  Note that there is a four hour overlap from 2000hr to 0200hr.  Evening shift guys get to try and sneak home without waking the family up at 0230hr or 0300hr.

I was just made a shift supervisor and we work 5/8, less free time and way easier on my 42 year old bod.

Shift rotation every four months.

5 eights  which as noted above SUCK!

Our Officers are on three 12.5 with a 10hr payback every month. Dispatch is on three 12's, then three 12's + an 8 (3days one week and 4days the next)

As noted twice above - eights, suck!  Dang I hate them.

Worked 12's when I was at another agency and even though it was in the jail, it really rocked.  All the time off was great.

Sure wish I could get back to it, people are too set in there ways around here to change.  Working this area, has been very enlightening.[>:/]

We work 12 hour shifts with 84 hours in each two week pay period with rotating weekends off. The troops love this shift.

7 24hr shifts per 21 day cycle.

24hr shifts is where it's at!!! Sorry LEO guys,,, don't hate me because you can't do em. [:D]

We work what's called the Norfolk Plan, we work Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Monday, Friday, Sunday and Wednesday. 7am to 7am each of these days. This give us a 4 1day breaks, a 2 day, 3day and 5 day break every 3 weeks. The 5 day weekend every 3 weeks is where it's at. A vacation every cycle. Gotta love it.


oh yea,, it's 56 hrs/wk but hey,, some stations get to sleep at night. I'm lucky enough to be at a station that averages 4+ calls per day AFTER midnight [BD]



Wednesday here,,,, just got out of bed. The Engine got up 5 times & the Truck 4 last night... damn you gotta love this ***t.
