LOS ANGELES (AP) One man was shot to death and another wounded after they allegedly attempted a carjacking against two FBI agents who were conducting surveillance, officials said.

The FBI agents apparently were targeted randomly and the incident remains under investigation.

FBI officials Friday declined to identify the slain suspect pending the notification of his relatives. The identity of the wounded suspect also was being withheld, along with the names of two others who were arrested because they are minors.

Both agents were assigned to the FBI's Los Angeles field office. The agency did not disclose their names.

The bureau said in a statement that the two agents were in a parked vehicle in Reseda during an investigation of a violation of the Hobbs Act, which concerns extortion and robbery.

The agents were ``accosted by four young male subjects, at least one of whom was armed'' about midnight and an altercation ensued when the four suspects allegedly tried to take the agents' vehicle, FBI officials said.

Authorities did not say how many shots were fired or how many individuals had guns.

The wounded suspect was hospitalized in stable condition. The other two suspects were in the custody of the Los Angeles Police Department.

FBI officials said a special team will investigate the shooting while local officials will consider criminal charges against the suspects.

They were on their way to the local military base to try and hotwire a Humvee when they noticed the much easier target of well armed FBI agents.

Kudos to those agents for arranging the miscreant's meeting with God/Jesus/Allah/Buddha/name-your-diety. Rehabilitation through Reincarnation - give it a chance!

Wonder if they'll tell their cell mates the story of how they fucked up and tried to carjack the FBI.

A similar incident happened in MD about 10-12 years ago.
Four hoods tried to carjack a guy in an apartment complex.
The guy was an FBI agent, on his way home from pistol qualification!
He killed two, wounded one and captured the fourth.

If the carjackers were minors not much is going to happen to them except the quick reply that they received during the attempted car jacking.

Strange!

Still nothing wrong with the outcome.

Sadly, this reminds me of an attempted robbery of two Secret Service agents in a vehicle during a stationary surveillance in Los Angeles many years ago. In that instance the bad guys won.

But I thought since California has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country, criminals can't get guns.

Similar thing happened in Baltimore a couple years ago. Perp was cruising the inner harbor, and thought an unmarked Crown Vic Interceptor (you know the ones with the low profile tires, small comms antenna, and gvt plates that don't look anything like a police car....) would be a good target. He drew down on one fed. The other fed came around behind and lit him up...gut shot him. They found him about sseven blocks away holding his own guts in with his hand. He's now in the pen with a colostomy bag

Extremely poor professional judgement on the hi-jackers part. A true occupational hazard. Given their probable rap sheets listing their professional accomplishments they could probably get Workmans Compensation in California.

I thought the standard issue now is a G23, aka "Glock fo-tay." Except these FBI agents obviously appeared "professional enough" to carry them.

I know some guys in college that were arrested for stealing road signs in KC. Apparently one of the signs was in front of an FBI stake-out. The FBI called the police and the guys were stopped a few miles away.
