The best ones are the ones you can wrap your hot little hands around.  The world's finest firearm in the safe or closet isn't worth a nickel.

The 870 is OK.  You need a good high capacity 9mm like a G19 or G17.  Where is the AR15 or AK?  A small pistol for a hide out or a long range rifle depending on your circumstances. OP list is really poor.

Why the 870 in 12 gauge...

but the Mossy in 20?

If I had a Mossy in 12 and the Remy in 20... would that be worse?

FPNI

My picks:

16" AR K.I.S.S. carbine in 5.56/.223 with a light, sling and red dot.

Duty size 9mm striker fired polymer pistol....I.E. your Glock 17/19, M&P 9, VP9, etc....

Reliable Pump or semi-auto shotgun........neither of which will be made by Mossberg or Remington. Benelli FTMFW

And a small concealable 9mm like a Shield, G43, LC9s, etc....

2. Mossberg 590A1 or Remington 870
3. Glock 17 or 19
4. HK USP Tactical

Wrong...

the question is "what is the best gun for self defense"

the answer is "the one you are wearing". For in that terrible moment, Everything else is irrelevant.

How does a giraffe benefit self defense?

Absolute best, no other factors considered?

IMHO:

1) The gun you can shoot the best and most naturally with a light on it.
2) 10mm MP5 with a suppressor, a light, and a giggle switch.
3) MP5SDK with a light and a giggle switch
4) 8.5-10.5in suppressed Ar15 SBR in [your chosen centerfire cartridge] with a light.

I believe GD consensus is:

1. AR in some flavor with a sling, optics, and light/nv

2. Handgun in popular caliber or 10mm.

3. PCC in configuration matching the above two.

4. Shotgun in case your plans involve opening a door to the hitlerverse.  (Sometimes its the only way).

Supressed SBR AR, I'll take mine in 300 blk
High capacity 9mm striker fired pistol (g19)
Reliable SA 12 ga (benelli ftw)
LR capable 30cal rifle, Larue/GAP etc

While the shotgun is better for defense, I'd swap out for a 9mm subcompact/pocket gun
