I was gonna buy a  460 magnum because you can shoot 3 caliber but at the end of the day I only want one, does make sense? I already have a 454 so I might as well buy the 500 , right?

The ported Redhawk is very easy to handle, and it has quick accurate follow-up shots.

No, but I have compared it to the 500 and the 480 (at least for me) was far more pleasant to shoot - but it is a 7.5" ported barrel....

I shot that 3" 460 at the range.  4 shots.  Fuck no,  never again, my ears are still ringing.  With really good earpro too.  We have overhead cover on the line, so that contributed.  Recoil was....brutal.

If I need that much horsepower, I'll pack my 16" 45-70 lever gun.

I've shot both, my father in law has the 460, coworker has the 500. I would go 460. I believe it's ballistically superior to the 500, and I have nailed targets with it out to 150 yds without compensating for drop at all, it would probably go further. It's a very impressive gun. His is a 7 or 8 inch barrel fwiw...

A friend of mine has both, and he prefers the .460, due to the versatility and cost savings of being able to shoot .45LC and .454, and also for the higher velocity/flatter trajectory for hunting. If I were buying one, it would be the .460.

I agree. I wouldn't buy the shorty unless it was solely for a range toy noise maker.

The 500 to me is a novelty range toy. I know guys have used it for hunting but the 460 is more versatile and it has better ballistics. Yes, the 500 has more recoil and it's fun, but do you go to the range to shoot something or just screw around?

Another vote for 500.  I routinely ping the gong at the range at 200 yards with no trouble.

Heard 460s have a 1200 round cylinder life and have to be sent back to S&W to get refurbished.

They are the same X-frame with similar pressure levels; do you really think there will be much difference in service life, between .460 and .500? And with the .460, you can shoot reduced power .45LC or .454 Casull, which will make it outlast the .500 by far. Use .45LC for plinking at the range, and .460 when you want to kill a deer at 150 yards.

I got them from Ballistic Supply,5636 road Moses Lake,WA 98837. Muzzle velocity,1200 FPS. Muzdvertiazle energy,2240 ft. lbs. {advertised}

I used to shoot my 500 a lot more than I do now, but with proper handloads it's a pussycat. With Hornady 500 gr XTP FP's though it is a bit of a handful

The 460 is definitely cool and ballistically beats the 500 at distance, but there's just something about those 50 cal slugs...

500 has more power, more recoil

460 has more blast, less recoil

For me the 500 wasn't fun to shot, the 460 not much recoil but a big old fire ball. 460 with 200 gr probably on par with 44 mag recoil maybe less.

The thing about 460 is it's designed for 200 yds deer shots. If the deer is at 250 yds hold in the same spot as the 200 yds shot and the drop will still be in the kill shot.

The 460 is such a bad mother fuc%er that to go the full speed 2350 fps the bullet isn't FMJ but FM everything , nothing else will hold up. I normally shoot the 240 gr at 2250 because can get them .25 each, where the all copper ones are close to 1.00 each.

Hornady came out with a 200 gr bullet that can go 2250 fps. The interesting thing of this bullet is it can be load up to 52 grs of H110 and holy shit does it put out a flame.

I went with the 460 as a back up for my muzzle loader when deer hunting.

With a gun that weights almost 5 lb shooting 200 gr bullet not a whole lot of kick but it's the percussion that gets to you.

The weird thing about the 460 is it shoots a bullet roughly twice heavy as an AK, but going roughtly the speed speed (AK 122 gr, 460 240 gr) Let that sink in.

.

(As a disclaimer I'm going off the top of my head on all these numbers)

More like an ounce and a half.

One ounce (advp) is 437.5 grains.

One ounce (troy) is 480 grains.
