What happened to 45 GAP?
For awhile there I saw ammo for it stacked high and deep. Not so much lately. So, did it die? I don't know anyone who owns one. For those who have one. how do you like it? |
Never saw much ammo even when all the hype was going on. None at all now. For that matter, i only saw one or two guns for sale.
.357 Sig seems to be getting more popular though. |
Last I saw, Glock was practically giving away their .45 GAP pistols.
It's not dead, but it's definately a niche cartridge at this point. |
Depends on your locality. NYSP and FHP both went to that round. If the local LEO has it, it shows up. The NYSP has had some good shoots with that round and the troopers I talked to seemed to like. That NYS+ trigger sucked donkey balls though. CDNN has Glock 37's and 38's on sale cheeep.
Glock ensured it will hang around for a while by supplying law enforcement with guns chambered in it. I'd imagine it will be a while before PA state police switches to something else.

It's a decent round, I have a G38 and it's nice, problem is finding ammo and accessories, the slide is wider so you can't use holsters for a 19/23. I bought it at Lawmens in SC and could always find ammo for it but not so much since I've moved...

It was a good but failed attempt to introduce a Glock round. They didn't like competing against the .45 ACP - Automatic Colt Pistol or the .357 SIG - Sig Sauer. They needed a Glock round. Too bad, so sad.
I laughed at the glock rep at the shot show who showed it to me, but if it had caught on and cheap fmj for practice was available i would consider it
Ammo like that NEVER DIES.
I just fired some .577/450 at the range last week. Last time a firearm was made for that cartridge was about 120 years ago. |

Glock only came up with that round so they could market pistols with 45acp performance and still have grips small enough for women and smaller (ie asian/hispanic) men as required by police departments. |
I was never really interested in it, but can someone who loves it explain to me why it is superior to 45 ACP or .40 or 9mm?

Isn't the GAP round just a round designed to function properly in the Glock chamber?
Well since the entire State Police here use it Im sure its not dead. Atleast until Glock decides its cheaper to talk them into something else then keep the thing going.

I remember the National Rifleman magazine with a Springfield 1911 compact on the cover, it had in bold print something like "Springfield Shrinks the GAP" Basically it was a 7/8 scale 1911 compact chambered in the .45 GAP which I thought was pretty cool. A 1911pistol in basically a 9mm size frame, that shot a .45 cal bullet that was similar ballistically to the .45 acp appealed to me. It ended up being a concept that never came to fruition. Had they made that pistol, I might own a .45 GAP gun, but as of now I can't see any reason to buy one.

Quoted: I would assume that 45gap would be available in some of those countries, but I doubt the small amount of civilian sales in those countries was anything Glock cares about. It fits in a double stack magazine in a regular glock magazine well, that's the "trick" I think it's been doing as good a job as 45acp in the few shootings it has been involved in. I know the NYSP are happy with it. |

I sell some occasionally to customers for $40 a box our store has maybe one case of it. The ammo is expensive like. 357 sig.

Their constitutional right to bear arms proclamation reads as open and free as any gun rights society would hope for, at first. However, possession of a firearm calibre used by the military is outlawed. And as soon as that new round is adopted by (some branch of) the federal government, it becomes banned. But it's neither here nor there since they are a completely crooked country. There are good people in Mexico but they are vastly outnumbered by criminals. |

Which is a reasonable enough goal, IMO. Problem is that departments tend to shy away from 45 caliber cartridges in general because of recoil concerns. Thus, why 9mm and 40 S&W remain so popular. |

Some countries ban military (equivalent) rounds for personal ownership. .45GAP opened these markets to .45 calber.
Already covered. I should have refreshed the thread and watched less beer brewing on TV. |

How long did they use the DAO Beretta 96? Too long, IMO. I see far too many gun shops saying stuff like, "Ah, the 45 Glock. You know it is only 1/10 inch away from being a good round"; and "Ah, Glocks, they blow up, you want to look at this Springfield XD. Doesn't it feel better in your hand than the Glock? It's cheaper, too!" I'm no Glockophile, but I think that the concept of the Glock 37 is a good one. It has fallen on deaf ears and the LGS culture has not helped it any. Also, fewer guys go to the gun counter and ask to look at/buy the same handgun that the cops do. |
I still like my colt commander in 45 acp. Brass is easy/free to find.
I have an XD in 45GAP that I bought really cheap. I lucked into a gun shop trying to get rid of half a case of ammo, so I am set for a little bit. It makes the same noise on poppers as 45ACP and knocks them down with the same authority. If ammo becomes impossible to find, I'll just modify some ACP cases with a case trimmer. Good luck finding extra 45 GAP mags for an XD though.
I like my Glock 37.
The only thing is that factory ammo is a bit expensive. On a local gun board I found a guy trying to offload a few hundred rounds of .45 GAP that a non gun-person had bought him as a gift for his 1911... I offered to trade him some cheap .45 ACP for it and he took me up on it. GAP for the price of ACP |
I suspect JMB smit down the GAP from Heaven for pure blasphemy Why mess with what he perfected??

The .45GAP is smoother shooting than the .40 and LEO's shoot higher overall scores in qualification with it. That is one reason some departments went with it. I know of one agency that looked at that as a criteria for choosing the .45GAP. |
If I can't get ammo for it at Walmart at 2:00 am, I won't carry it.
As a brass whore, I judge a rounds popularity by how much brass I find when scrounging.
About three or four years ago, there was some .45 GAP brass to be tossed when collecting .45 ACP. Since then, nothing.

As already mentioned, the Florida Highway Patrol has gone to the G37. I'm pretty sure there was a weeks' worth of drunken debauchery to celebrate the demise of the Beretta 96G, which seemed to be universally hated. My understanding is that shooting scores have improved, but practice ammo is impossible to find. It hasn't been "put to the real test" by FHP yet, though.
I think ultimately it falls into that "Hey, better luck next time..." category.

I'm surprised the sub compact isn't the most popular CCW gun, seems like a great solution minus ammo availability.

Just out of curiosity why was the Beretta 96G hated? |

I like the thinking behind it but here in CT it is somewhat of a joke. You would have to work so hard to find ammo that none of the stores will give you anything on one in a trade. ( I don't blame them) Had a guy bring one in on a transfer to my friends shop. Guy ran his mouth all over the place as to how smart he was to find this brand new Glock for way less than any of the local shops. My buddy asked him if he had priced ammo and it became clear that Mr Bigmouth did not realise there was a difference between 45GAP and 45ACP.Guy got all pissed off when he demanded my buddy do a trade for a Glock 45ACP against his GAP. He thought it should only cost him $50 or so to trade his dog for a ACP! |
I wish the NYPD would make the switch so that we can kill bad people much good'er like the NY State Police does!

Last year when ammo was hard to come by the local gunstore had it every time I walked in. The owner said everytime he was on the phone with his distributor they asked if he wanted some .45 GAP and the 5.7FN or whatever it is. Apparently they coulnd't unload either of those even in the panic.

Yes...but the Brits made like piles of Martini Henry rifles...and you can still buy rifles in the caliber from IMA and Atlanta Cutlery. And ammo is about $120 a box of 20...or reload them yourself. I own three rifles in this caliber...ammo is a bitch. |

I won one in a raffle on this site. The pistol was donated to the raffle by Captainpooby.
I was given 2000 rounds by a friend who sold his GAP. So I'm good to go for now. |
