RUGER SUPER BLACKHAWK "HUNTER" , hands down. I don't own that particular style, but the regular Super Blackhawk was assume. Walked all over my 6.5" S&W. The hunter has the mounts for the Ruger rings.

Having tried the S&W M29 and the Ruger Redhawk, I vote for the Redhawk. Even thought the Smiths generally have better triggers, the Redhawk is stronger and has a longer cylinder.

As far as Smith vs Ruger Redhawk...I like the Ruger..Tried em both. The Smith is not a "bad" pistol, but the Ruger is more BANG for your buck. [pistol]

I have shot a Ruger Super Redhawk 7 1/2" and a S&W 629 6 1/2" Powerport. The Redhawk was heavy as a brick but the weight helped manage recoil. The S&W was much lighter and the porting cut muzzle rise by about 50%, but even though the gun had Hogues it was uncomfortable to shoot due to the open backstrap design.

What about Dan Wesson (Wesson Arms) I have been happy with mine. http://www.danwessonfirearms.com/main_page.htm

I had a Super Redhawk w/2x scope for a while. The grip, for me, was too long and thin. Used it for one boar hunt at Hunter-Ligget, then traded it off. I have had pretty good luck with the Taurus handguns I've owned (pt92, pt99, 66). For the money, I'd go with the Taurus. Depending on what you are going to do with it.

Presellout S&W 629 classic, light handy and strong enough. The trigger is not a little better than the Ruger, it is a whole bunch better than the Ruger.

I don't get the whole "pre sellout", "post sellout" thing. If you buy it used, no matter when it was made, the money isn't going to S&W. Isn't used good enough?

I do some deer hunting somestimes with my S&W 629 6" I have a Leupold 2.5X scope on top of it. While Ruger makes a good pitol, I hate how they feel in my hand, I guess just a personal preference thing but I would'nt own one. I have owned Taurus in the past and could'nt find anything wrong with those either.

I have an older Model 29 with the 8" barrel, its the classic Dirty Harry model. Its an accurate revolver. And it has the best blueing of any gun I own.

... If used for hunting, consider the Freedom Arms model FA-83-44AS ... Quality doesn't come cheap

today I just purchased a ruger redhawk with a 5 1/2'' barrel at B & S guns in Dallas. Thanks to everyone for their input. [beer]

I like Rugers. The Super Black Hawk and the Red Hawk are well built. But the Red Hawk is more comfortable to shoot. The S&W 629 is also comfortable to shoot, but their revolvers eventually rattle apart. Unlike the Rugers which are stronger. Also S & W really should be boycotted. I have no problem if you want to buy a used S&W revolver though. But Rugers are a better gun.
